Within the Vedic tradition, there exists a culture of varnashrama dharma. This is a culture that takes into consideration every individual psychophysical nature. One is classified according to their main propensities of their work, and not the type of birth status that they hold. This Varnashrama dharma system has four main or broad categories, namely: brahmana’s (priests, teacher and advisors), ksatriyas (warriors and administrators), Vaisya’s (farmers and merchants) and the Sudra’s (craftsmen and workers). For Bhima, a hero means fighting one’s enemies and protecting the society, also taking revenge if needed. As it is known that a hero is someone, typically a man who is admired for being brave and have done something (hero Meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary). Bhima, as a warrior, he wanted to take an immediate revenge on the Kauvaras for their insults and ill-treating Draupadi after the dice game. He made a numerous threats to kill them, He said to his brother Yudhisthira that there is no need to discuss and watch the Kauvaras humiliating them, he should just kill them all at once (Ganguli, 2002, 131-141). If Bhima was given an opportunity to kill all these people, he would be celebrated as a good ksatriya, a hero, however, he is not given a chance by Yudhisthira who did not want any quarrelling, only peace. One can get from this that Yudhisthira’s way of being a hero is to invite peace wherever he is, he wants peace for all, even for sinners. Looking at the duties of a ksatriya, one may say that the Pandavas should have fought the Kauvaras on the spot, however, Yidhisthira did not think in that way, as the only words he said to Bhima were “be peaceful, brother” iskconreference. Yudhisthira’s mood as ksatriya and having a quality of a hero, he does not always advice the killing of villains. As shown in the scene where he pleaded with Chitrasena the king of the Gandharvas who …show more content…
He willing to do anything, always ready to fight because that is his duty. He is willing to die for his belief. In the Mahabharata there is no scene where Bhima is turning down a fight for the sake of peace. He shows that as ksatriya, a courageous one has to lead by example and always ready to protect the residents. He is embracing his position fully, as seen when the Pandavas were exiled to the forest, he could not tolerate living in a forest when he is not a yogi but a prince iskconrefence. The mood of anger is shown as he wants to go back and the Kauvaras. In this age, this is what is expected from a courageous warrior. However, another thing one can see from Bhima’s courageous to serve his dharma is that he is depicting a quality of a blood thirsty person. This can be found where he promises to kill and drink his enemies’ blood (Ganguli, 132). One may ask if that is a duty of a ksatriyas who has courage in battle. However, Yudhistira gives a different view of a courageous warrior, his does not just fight and kill and break thighs of his enemies. In my opinion, he is a good warrior because when he fights, he takes into consideration how it will affect the people. In many occasions he forgave those in distress and could not fight back. However, one may say that he is spineless, always wants to avoid quarrels and that is not ksatriya dharma. However, showing that he is courageous, he played dice game although he
