What Are The Pros And Cons Of Being An Authoritarian Parent
A little boy in first grade goes home and shows his mom his first terrible grade of the year. The mother, appalled by this, reacts by screaming at her son terrifying the little boy. This leaves him traumatized because his mother has never screamed at him before. He learns from fear that he should not receive a terrible grade or he will be in trouble. In this situation, the mother could have reacted differently and motivated her son that it will be hi last, he should just try harder. The mother’s reaction is an example of an authoritarian parent; they expect everything done the way they set the rules without being supportive towards their child. Every child has different personalities and it is hard, as a parent, to raise children to be a significant adult. Being a parent is a difficult responsibility because a parent is not only responsible for themselves but their child as well. There are guidelines and helpful tips but sometime shtee guidelines are not enough because of certain situations that the family may come across. Some parents …show more content…
It is not the correct way to teach a child to grow up. A parent that cares about their child will listen and talk to them as a friend not an authoritarian figure. Children will learn better this way than when they are constantly being yelled at. If a child is raised by an authoritarian parent they will find a way to better themselves or hopefully seek help but many are scared and have shut down many thought processes because of their many worries. Children cannot control where they live and how they are treated because they are too young and their brain does not understand many concepts or as to why they are treated the way they are. They believe it is a normal way of being raised because that is what they have experienced by themselves. These children may even say, “If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.” George Bernard

Both of my parents placed as an authoritarian parental style. Their parenting style had a huge effect on me. Because of there high control and low warmth I learned where my attachment came from. I do not expect my parents to be a permissive because I do not want to have everything my way, I do not want to a uninvolved parent because I need the love, affection and support from both parents. We can not choose how we want our parents to be.…

An Authoritarian parenting style involves one or both of the parents making decisions without the consultation of the children. Children have a high expectation from the parents and if the expectations are not met the children are usually punished and also the children are rarely praised or rewarded for their positive behaviour. The children may not develop the ability to make decisions and may not accept responsibility if a decision is not made. Children may also not want to discuss problems with the parents for the fear of the punishment, and the children may also rebel against this method of parenting without regard for the consequences.…

Strong rules and penalties are set, but children are also taught that it is okay to make mistakes. Often, the child will be warned and forgiven if they don’t reach a certain level of expectation. However, while forgiveness can be offered, the main part of authoritative parenting is setting the rules and then sticking to them. Too often, parents give their children rules, and then fail to follow through; this teaches your child zero except that you don’t mean what you say. The entire goal of authoritative parenting is to teach. Teaching children to be mature, teaching them that they are responsible for their own actions and the rewards or penalties that come from them. Also teaching independence, understanding, and the fact they if they need something, they are always able to turn to their parents and will be acknowledged with friendliness and…

Authoritarian parenting is when the parents are very strict. They have a high number of rules, and they handle disobedience by yelling, blaming, or threatening the child. They set very strict rules to follow but will not give explanation as to why to follow the rule. They are very demanding and do not show much warmth. They so not give a child options or choices. The child will typically listen to this because of fear and not necessarily because they want to do good, they are just afraid of what will happen if they don’t do as told. A child living in an authoritarian household doesn’t particularly learn to think for him or herself or make good very wise decisions. This is because they never get to decide what they want to do or what they think is right. This is a result from being afraid to make decisions in fear that if they make the wrong…

Children do not come with guidelines or instructions. What they do come with is a crucial set of physical and emotional needs that need to be met. To raise children properly, parents duties are not limited to just food, shelter and protection. Parents are largely responsible for their children’s success in life. Parents are required to teach and educate children. They have to shape knowledge and character into their children to prepare them to face the real world. To be successful with this, parents must provide self esteem needs, teach moral and values and provide discipline that is both effective and appropriate. As the generations have changed, many parenting styles have evolved, as well. While growing up my mother was always more of an authoritarian parent. As I have grown up and have children on my own, I choose not to parent with the same parenting methods that she had used. I am more of an authoritative parent. There are great differences in both my mother’s and my parenting styles, such as parental responsiveness and parental demandingness; however the largest disparity is the end result: the children.…

Parents are usually very warm, caring and loving to their children, but are not assertive or controlling, there are no demands from these parents (Wentzel & Russel 2009). Hence the reason why this parenting style has been highly associated with children’s and adolescents’ underachievement (Onatsu-Arvilommi & Nurmi, as cited in Aunola et al., 2000). The permissive parent promotes immaturity as well as lack of impulse control and self-reliance, the child also exhibits a lack of independence and social and cognitive competence (Baumrind, as cited in Starr,…

The authoritarian approach provides children with a set of rules that must be followed without questioning. There is a “do as I say not as I do” attitude. The authoritarian parenting style is the stricter style. According to the textbook, “The authoritarian child-rearing style is low in acceptance and involvement, high in coercive control, and low in autonomy granting” (Berk, 2010, pg. 279). Parents who use this method set strict limits and show little or no love appearing to be cold. If a child resists the parent, the parent will result into a forceful punishment. It is not uncommon for a parent with this approach to shame, blame, punish, and tease his or her child. The most common reason for parents using this method is that they do not want their children to become failures.…

Authoritarian parents are very strict with discipline and often have non-negotiable rules. These types of parents instruct the child and do not consider the child’s opinion. This type of parenting causes serious developmental issues. Children with authoritarian parents learn not to discuss issues with their parents and as a result are often greatly influenced by peers. These same children also lack social competence and show less intellectual curiosity. Boys from this category also show the highest level of violence.…

Mr. and Mrs. Harsh-Heart use authoritarian parenting style, I do not see any advantages when a parent uses this type of parenting style to raise their children. Authoritarian parenting style set very high standards for the children; parents are very demanding and are not responsive to the child’s needs or concerns. Parents don’t try to understand the child or try to understand the child’s point of view. These parents set strict rules of conduct and are critical of their children for not meeting these high standards. Parents want to control their children by telling them what they need to do without explaining why they want their children to do things and if the child questions the authority, parents reply with “Because I said so”, instead of going in to detail why it’s not a good choice. Children raised by authoritarian parents don’t learn to think for themselves and don’t understand why parents want them to behave in a certain way. Parents with Authoritarian parenting style tend to focus more on bad behavior than positive behavior; if the child behaves badly they are harshly punished. Children may learn to behave themselves because of fear of the parent or may have a hard time learning to think for them or they may rebel in reaction to the controlling methods of their parents.…
