The overall Canadian reputation is not only dictated by foreign policy, but also internal affairs. One of the number one reasons people give for favouring Canada is its multiculturalism and openness to immigrants. During his time as Prime Minister, Lester Pearson introduced the White Paper in Canada, which- for the first time in the world-
based immigration policies on credit and individual skill instead of ethnicity. This system, while now more reformed, is still in effect in Canada and contributes greatly to both national and international appreciation of multiculturalism in Canada. Under Pearson’s government Canada also got its current flag design; completely independent from Great Britain, and the Medicare Act was passed. This allowed each province to establish their own universal healthcare which would become the foundation for the healthcare system we have today; another thing that people admire about Canada.
In conclusion, Lester Pearson did play a large role in establishing Canada’s international reputation as both the nation and its people as peaceful and welcoming. While several of the policies he established are now out of date or have been changed, he still sowed the seeds for many fundamental Canadian values. Even though during his term as Prime Minister the Vietnam War made Canada-USA relations strained, Pearson helped develop both countries into big trading partners and continued advocating for peace even though he did not receive support from the President.
