The film the Lord of the Flies directed by Harry Hook and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness involve strong links in terms of the major ideas presented in both texts. Through major characters, themes and techniques the texts ultimately form a dark picture of the human condition and the darkness concealed within humanity illustrated through the struggle of good vs. evil.
The theme of good vs. evil is presented in both texts through civilisation vs. savagery. In the Heart of Darkness the characters Marlow and Kurtz represent this theme. Marlow who is presented as a civilised character is hired during the Victorian period to work as a steamboat captain as the boat journeys into the Congo River in search of ivory. Like Kurtz Jack too is hungry for power. At the beginning of the film one of the boys named Ralph appears to be the leader. Out of jealousy, Jack then used similar persuasive skills belonging to Kurtz in bringing the boys to acknowledge that his views are the right ones despite conflicting with Ralph’s. The irony of this is that his ‘correct’ views are resultant in slaughter. Such actions are a result of Jack loosing his civilised self to the surrounding environment. In the end Jack does realise what he has done wrong which is established as upon being rescued he looks in dismay upon the rescue team who symbolise civilisation. A high angle shot is also used as a rescuer looks down upon Jack representing the fact that he is weak whereas high angle shots were used earlier as the boys once looked up to Jack. Like Kurtz such features and actions undertaken by Jack present him to have unleashed his savage rather than being one in the first
