“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around it” says Atticus.(Lee, 30) In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, racism is shown as a big part through the eyes of a modest little girl named Scout. Scout learns numerous things by trying to learn something from another person’s perspective. She tries to think of things that could have happened if racism didn’t exists and how people would react and treat each other.

Maycomb County. An obvious racism act that had happened would be the Tom Robinsons trial. Another known racism act was presented when Mr. Raymond likes to be with the colored people than his own race, and last about how Jem and Scout are bullied because their father, Atticus a lawyer is taking the side of a Negro, Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson’s life was always filled with racism because of his race. He was put into trial because of people with a corrupt status such as Bob Ewell. Even though Tom Robinson’s testament was truthful, Bob Ewell won the trial because he was white. They made this decision despite that Bob Ewell was a horrible person from not a rich part of town, yet the jury still took his side. After listening to this trial Jem, still wondered why they had made this choice because Tom Robinson was saying the truth. Then Atticus explains to Jem that “If you had been on that jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man.”(Lee, 220) Mr. Raymond was another person who was really involved in racism. He was a man that had joined the black community even though he was white. Mr. Raymond was a rich and respected in the community before he chose to live his life with the colored. He didn’t like the way people lived Maycomb County, so he acted as the town drunk. During the trial Dill had started to cry so him and Scout had left the building and had met Mr. Raymond outside. This the time when he tells the truth to Scout, he states “Secretly, Miss Finch, I’m not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live.” Jem and Scout, two young innocent children are being hated on by their peers because their father Atticus was to defend Tom Robinson.
The individuals of the county hated the black community so bad, that if anyone became involved, even the finch family would be hated by the county. The people hated that one of their kind of person was supporting the other race. Also, the children that were less educated in school would verbally be mean to Scout and Jem. Scout did not like this because the kids didn’t know what they were talking about so she physical hurt them, even though her father said no. But what really is sad when one of your own family member is being rude and mean, like Scout’s cousin. Hatred always causes harm. In to Kill a Mockingbird, racism is reoccurring because it takes places in many of the events. Racism affects always in a negative way, and to everyone that lived in Maycomb County. It eventually hurt Scout, Jem, and Mr. Raymond but it eventually killed Tom Robinson. Racism is going to continue, but so sad how people can’t stop themselves from judging
others.
