Visual Representation Response

There are two sides perceived in this image, utopia and dystopia. Both signify the environment of a perfect world and on the other hand a world which is nothing but unpleasant. The tree branches symbolise utopia and dystopia. Utopia is seen a peaceful, safe, appealing atmosphere as the leaves are lively and the sky is glistening. Dystopia is understood as a propaganda (controlling minds), an oppressive government and the environment is not as pleasant as freethinking is also excluded. These atmospheres vary widely, but as with dystopia; the grass is greener on the other side.

The tree branches without the leaves symbolise how lifeless and inactive Dystopia is. The society is controlled

    Morrison uses the elements of symbolism and metaphor to create a powerful depiction of emotions. The imagery of beautiful trees in Beloved attempts to mask the horrors that took place among them. Ironically ,beautiful Trees are perverted into a symbol of horrible acts. The characters of Beloved were faced in a time period where they have been oppressed to the point of dehumanization and subjected to the idea of companionism of inanimate objects (trees, in this case).     The forest symbolizes doubt. Physically the forest is mysterious, dark and suspicious. G.K. Chesterton uses alliteration to describe the physical qualities of the forest. For example, he uses the phrase “chaos of chiaroscuro” to portray the “patterns of sun and shade.” The forest is dark in some spots and dazzling in others with shadows overlapping. Within the forest there are strange animals and insects roaming the woods. The symbolic meaning of these woods in G.K. Chesterton’s story is the “wood of witchery.” He uses this statement to explain the doubt one can feel in the woods and to refer to the uncertainty of what could happen next. The word witchery is used because the woods are enigmatic. One has little clue as to what could be around the corner.
