From Mary Magdalene to Joan of Ark to the modern woman, women have come a long way, and many practices both subordinate and empower them. For centuries, women have been oppressed in religious texts “The New Testament of the bible, for example, urges women to be subordinate to their husbands…” (Pg. 246). They have long been stereotyped and placed in a position of inequality and submissiveness, as referenced many times in the Bible. (Pg. 246) Women have also be humiliated in the religious faiths and excluded from the work place. The main focal group to have seen the rapid shift was the African American community. Through the power of religious believe and a determination to raise above sexism and inequality, women of the early 1950’s through the late 1960’s turned to faith and challenged the status quo. Religion has always played a great role in the liberation of women, especially on the public stage involving politics. Religion has always been one of the predominantly male dominated practices in virtually all societies.
