Simple folks gathered in a circle gossiping about one another or was there an actual evil aura upon Salem in 1692? Court rooms, graves, and jails filled with those accused f this ominous act. They called it witchcraft, the act of the devil possessing someone to commit his acts of evil. The Salem Witch Trials were fueled by the economical status of the person, jealousy and anger, as well as self profit.
Age, gender, and marital status played a huge part in this hysteria. Women that were single from the ages 16-20 accused those women married ages 41-60 of this ominous act (Doc B.). As doing my research I reviewed facts that mostly women had been accused of witch craft as well as those who have been accused happening to be female as well. There were a total of 23 single female accusers (Doc B.) and a total of 61 married women accused (Doc B.)
The lies pretences and acting kept the hysteria fueled. These people of Salem had no solid evidence witchcraft even existed. A simple nod of the head to them was a possible spell to harm someone’s well being. For example in the examination of Bridget Bishop a simple head shake afflicted a girl. “She shook her head, and the afflicted were tortured”(Doc C.). Great Acting only helped determine her verdict. The examiner already had the mindset she was as guilty as the days long.
The economical status of a person could cause hatred towards them, so of course this also played a role. Between the years 1661-1681 people in the eastern half of salem village gained wealth and political influence. Leaving the western side powerless, causing an upraise of hate. (Doc E.) There were approximately 16 people accused of witch craft on the Eastern side. While 30 people were the accusers on the Western side. A close relation in my eyes. Which brings me back to my point of this hysteria was all brought on by jealousy.
Although Salem hysteria was believed to be brought on by “magic” and “the
