It was a cold foggy night when the explosion struck the USS Maine at 9:40pm on February 15, 1898. Men were playing cards while also cleaning up and getting ready for bed, missing their wives and children when suddenly it sounded like buildings were crashing, men were yelling at the top of their lungs for help, an explosion was happening. Due to the explosion we now know an estimated amount of deaths, there were 250 casualties along with 14 others that had been injured and that eventually were killed too. The ship approximately weighed over 6,000 tons and roughy costed more than $2 mill, the USS Maine ship had exploded by an unknown source. United States of America placed the blame on Spain for the purpose that this mystery had still been unsolved,…
The Americans declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898 after the USS Maine exploded in the Havana Harbor. This declaration began the Spanish American War in which led to the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba on July 1, 1898. The United States headed to Cuba with the intention of battling the Spaniards who had taken over Cuba and the Cubans. MAJ General Shafter led the V Corps which consisted of three divisions and one independent brigade. MAJ General Joseph Wheeler commanded the Calvary Division, Brigadier Generals J.F. Kent and H.W. Lawton commanded the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions, and Brigadier General J.C. Bates commanded the Independent Brigade. General Arsenio Linares led the Spaniards in Cuba, and Admiral Sampson was in charge of the Naval Battle ship which carried the V Corps into Cuba.…

In 1897, the President of the United States, William McKinley, was conflicted with declaring war on the country of Spain. At the time, the United States had significant interest in the country of Cuba. They had both genuine humanitarian concern over the continued Spanish misrule and economic interests.1 Although the American people wanted a war declaration, McKinley was looking for a more peaceful approach to liberate Cuba. In early 1898, the Cuban insurgents were fighting for their independence, and the USS Maine was sent to Havana to protect those within the city.2 During the early morning hours on February 15, there was an explosion, which led to the sinking of the ship and ultimately the death of over 260 American men. Despite supporting evidence never being discovered, the Americans were determined the Spanish were the cause of the explosion.…
The Spanish American War is simply an abomination of American morals and ideals. Spain and the United States are currently in conflict, as a result of American intervention in Cuba. America has yet again impressed its indomitable will upon fledgling nations, and in this case, one that did not even need “help” especially since it was already under Spanish control, regardless of how relaxed or ineffective that role may have been.…
The situation with Spain was already tense, but I believe that the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine was the final straw that led to the invasion of Cuba in 1898. On November 27, 1897, Fitzhugh Lee forwarded an account to Washington D.C. to describe the living conditions in Cuba. Then on December 3, 1897, Lee sent a letter 3 months before the explosion, requesting war ships at Key West and Dry Tortugas. Lee also requested that a coal station would be established in Dry Tortugas. On April 11, 1898, President McKinley went before Congress to ask for a declaration of war. The reasons that President McKinley provides are issues that went on before the explosion and he also uses the explosion as a reason.…

Neutrality was no longer the case whenever William McKinley became president in 1897. One of the many causes of the spanish american war was that America agreed with the Cuban rebellion against the Spanish. The spanish were not too happy. There was also an unexplained explosion on the battleship U.S.S Maine in the havana Harbor that related to the Spanish. These two, along with many other factors, created the war. The effects of the war was the Treaty of Paris. Spain finally let go of their possession with Puerto Rico, The Philippines, Guam, and many others. The Treaty of Paris was a very important time for both…
The statement, “The explosion of the U.S.S. Maine caused the United States to invade Cuba in 1898,” is not agreeable because there were other causes for the Spanish American War. The explosion of the Maine was perhaps caused America’s attention towards war to increase. When the Maine exploded many believed the Spanish were responsible even though the cause of the explosion was unknown. Headlines read, “Destruction of the War Ship Maine was Work of an…
Of course, due to the escalating tensions between the Spanish government and the United States, President McKinley tried to persuade the US to go to war with Spain. For one, McKinley did this by bringing up the naval damage done to a US ship in Cuba. The text states, “... The Spanish government can not assure safety and security to a vessel of the American Navy in the harbor of Havana on a mission of peace, and rightfully there.” (Emory 88).…
On the Night of February 15th, 1898 at approximately 9:40p.m the U.S battleship the Maine was destroyed.3 The explosion happened that night while the ship was at anchor in Havana Harbor, and was believed to have been caused by a mine exploding, presumable set of by a Spanish solder.3 The explosion ripped the bottom half of the ship of causing it to skink and killing 266 men including the staff on board.3, 4 At…
The Mexican-American War all started by Texas. They wanted its independence and started fighting with Mexico and that lead to the Mexican American War and led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 where they paid $15 millions of dollars for Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California and bits of other states as well. Mexico was filled with internal struggles that approached on the Civil War. However, it was refusing to recognize the independence of Texas. Mexico threatened war with U.S if it took possession of Texas. Americans moved to Texas Territory, the cry grew for Texas to be part of the U.S. This began to happen in 1835, when Texas declared its independence from Mexico. The Mexican-American War was carried on for two years, and clashes…

unforgiving than the Spanish American War. An excerpt from the Library of Congress stated, “The war had cost the United States $250 million and 3,000 lives, of whom 90% had perished from infectious diseases.” . This war brought out the worst in Americans when it came to securing vital information, interrogation tactics were implied by forcing water down people’s stomachs, known as Water Cure. Many people argued we went too far and may have been the enemy we were trying to defeat. It would be almost 40 years later after WWII, when the Philippines finally regain their independence.…
