There is no social concept or definition on what to constitute good parenting. There are no instruction or guidelines written for parents until you become a parent yourself; the definition varies by culture, place, or gender. Because of differences in background that individuals possess, it is understandable that there will be different styles of parenting. Parents are considered the first teachers of the child’s life, not only talking or walking but also teaching them moral values. In my experience as a mother, to raise a child requires love, patience, wisdom, nurturing, and discipline, but not corporal punishment. First, in a child’s life a mother’s love is the most important feature in a child’s early development. According to Dr. John W. “If a Mothers Love is missing it can lead to depression, anxiety, and bullying, poor achievements in school, violence, and drug and alcohol addictions." (John Travis, 1975). Depression, violence, and various substance addictions are often the result of not having a “Mother’s love” in a child’s life. The moment a child is born, he or she need to know that someone is there for them, and that begins with the mother. The bond between the mother and the child are usually the most common, even though both parents are present in the child’s life. Both a father and a mother are responsible for the nurturing of this new life; however, society often looks to the mother to guide a child though his or her first years. Therapist Catherine Gayron says, “A Mothers love builds self-esteem". By giving a child a nurturing and loving atmosphere to grow, both a mother and father can ensure that the child will understand that he or she can be afforded the safety of a home and two caring parents.
