what doeas hospitality means to you
What does hospitality mean to you?
As once noted by Henri J.M. Nouwen, “Hospitality means primarily the creation of free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place.” In my opinion, hospitality represents kindness in welcoming guests or strangers. It isn’t about judging who is good or who is bad, it is about accepting people for who they are and being caring as well as respectful towards them. For example, the word "hospital" comes from the Latin "hospes" which refers to guest or host. From "hospes" came the Latin "hospitalia", an apartment for strangers or guests. The etymology of this word shows that essentially hospitality is to welcome a group of people and make sure that they are well taken care of.
Being hospitable is not always easy; it requires patience, love, care, generosity, friendliness, as well as good social skills and much more. This is why I believe that for a good hotel, restaurant, hospital or any business of this kind this can only be achieved if the faculty and the manager in charge acquire these characteristics. In addition, this will attract visitors, tourists and guests due to its good reputation. Though some people may not return the respect you give them, it is necessary and courteous to remain patient and welcoming. Hospitality isn’t just about the owner’s qualities, in fact it is also about the customer’s needs and wants, and how the faculty and the manager of a business adapt to them. How can one treat their guest in an unwelcoming manner? It isn’t just rude but it is also disrespectful, impolite and offensive. Furthermore, by acting in such a way it leads to fleeing customers. I believe that being hospitable is all about someone’s attitude and will to do to others what is expected to be done to oneself.

Hospitality is a difficult concept to define; numerous authors suggest it is both a social and commercial activity (Lugosi 2008). Nevertheless it’s important to highlight a dominant theme in accepted definitions of hospitality. Brotherton (1999) defined hospitality as “a contemporaneous human exchange, which is voluntarily entered into, and designed to enhance the mutual well-being of the parties concerned through the provision of accommodation, and/or food and drink”. Lashley (2000) sees hospitality as an overlap of three spatial domains including private, social and commercial. Thus hospitality is a broad conception in which social, domestic or private and commercial forms are found. The following essay will encompass arguments that suggest though commercial hospitality holds common themes and values as hospitality in the home, it is not just an extension, rather it’s seen as its own domain.…
