In the writing “Joyas Voladoras” by Brian Doyle at the end of paragraph 3 and the beginning of paragraph 4 the shift goes from talking about hummingbird hearts, to talking about the blue whale heart. Before the shift Brian was talking about how many heart beats we spend in a lifetime and used shorter sentences, for example stating “It's expensive to fly”. You burn out. You fry the machine. You melt the engine.”…
Throughout the essay “Joyas Volardoras”, Brian Doyle describes the heart of different animals and gives details of how those animals live their life according to their necessities. As we can see in the first 3 paragraphs, the author introduces the hummingbirds to us with many facts and descriptions. Doyle begins this essay by saying: “Consider the hummingbird for a long time”, and then he starts to narrate how fast a hummingbird's heart beats and how strong but fragile they can be. As you keep reading, you will find out that, Doyle is not talking about hummingbirds anymore. Now he is comparing a hummingbird to a tortoise. He says:…
When I read the title of the reading, I am very curious about “Joyas Voladoras”. I try to figure out what the author talks about. Does this essay tell about the name of something? And I decide to read more to get main point. The essay “Joyas Voladoras” is written by Brian Doyle. He is using the picture of hummingbird as a way to talk about other things, especially is humans including emotions and life itself. I think hummingbirds are really amazing, the author states that “Each one visits a thousand flowers day. The can dive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backward. They can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest”(194). A little wings…
Initially I had a different perspective on this line. I just thought it was cool, because it makes me think of the sweat melodies that humming birds sing at the begin of a beautiful spring day. But after reading the play, I had a different perspective on the line. It’s ironic. Torvald does not yet know that his song bird (his wife) has been singing false notes for eight years.…
too just accept death and let it happen. The literary elements I took from this story that were…
In the poem, the author describes the scene of birds singing early in the morning and how quickly the sereneness ends. The author uses diction and metaphors to describe the birds’ song.…
“Here is a small fact: You are going to die.” Death said this quote. He the narrator of Markus Zuka’s The Book Thief. Although this quote from Death is scary, he says later, “I urge you - don’t be afraid.” Everyone will die eventually, Death himself even said that. Whether that be intentional or accidental, the effects of death can change the direction of someone’s life, for the better or for the worse.…
This quote is about living in the present, not focusing too much on the past or the future. I often struggle with being content in the moment, and I am always looking forward to my next goal, next trip, next adventure. I want to be more present in the moment, noticing the little things like the life in the desert or the stars in the sky, as this quote says. I want to be able to be present as a teacher, appreciating the little ways I am inspired by what my students do, say, and write. I want to be able to appreciate and acknowledge the little acts of empathy, compassion, and kindness I witness in my students, rather than just look forward to summer vacation.…
I don’t even like to consider the fact that one day I will die. Death is such an unknown. We all hope to live a long, high quality, and healthy life, but we don’t consider the alternative. We don’t talk to our family and fill out advance directives because we don’t want to face death. We don’t want to have difficult conversations, even though we all know that someday we will die.…
About 88 years ago, the United States of America began one of the greatest economic losses it has ever seen. On October 29,1929, or “Black Tuesday”, marked the start of the decade long depression. There are clear reasons why the event occurred, how it ended, and how it affected the common person. On October 29, 1929 the worst stock market crash the United States had ever seen began.…
Morrie aphorism “What if today were my last day on earth?” (p. 64) made me think. When Mitch said that to Morrie it made me think about it too. Since Mitch knew already that Morrie was going to die soon, it made him think about it too. I have to say that if someone ever mentioned something like this in a conversation it would make them think about it because thats life. Like Forest Gump said a movie that almost everyone uses “Life Like A Box of Chocolates” because you don't know what you’re going to get which relates to this in a way because you dont whats going to happen to tomorrow basically you don't know what the future holds for you. You might not even wake up because one cannot for tell the future. Anyways the aphorism has been true to me because no one would want to talk about their last day on earth, they just want live and enjoy life because this is one in a lifetime. I also feel like i can feel how they are feeling when Morrie and MItch are having a conversation and that comes up. Like what if today was my last day on day ,how would I act or say. I can speak for about everyone when i say everyone would be scared if they thought today was their last day on earth. Personally I will be terrified especially…
Throughout his work, Joyas Voladoras, Brian Doyle describes the life and the heart of different mammals, focusing on the hummingbird and the blue whale. By contrasting these two, Doyle introduces an interesting idea of life, not only between hummingbirds and whales, but with all living things. “Every creature on earth has approximately two billion heart beats to spend in a lifetime” (274).…
Today's speech is about humor, laughter and comedy. This is not an informative speech on a boring subject that we have already heard of. The purpose of my speech is to to bring some light and share a theory that has proven it self true. Everybody finds men funny, especially me. My humor attracts the ladies i tell you. But there is a simple reason for it. This is only because women are not funny. I mean not as funny as men. Now don't get mad ladies, because i don't want to offend anyone, but this can be proven on so many levels. Therefore i am going to give you the 3 main reasons as to why you ladies are not as funny and why you love when we make you laugh. The 3 reasons will be the basis of my roadmap. So lets get right down to it. Women are less funny than us because genetically they have less humor. Then i will show and tell you how psychologically and socially women…
Death – the inevitable fate of every living person, is often a stage in the cycle of life that is often feared, avoided, or misunderstood. Often time’s literary works contain elements of death to symbolize the end or rebirth of a person or place. Death shows no bias, no prejudice or discriminatory action. Death, quite simply, is the ultimate fate. It can be argued, that without death, there is no reason to live because there is nothing to fear.…
Brian Doyle, Author of “Joyas Valdoras”, uses the hummingbird metaphor to support his story. The story starts off by grabbing the reader’s attention with a fact. The fact is very interesting. Unless you are someone that studies animals, you would have no idea that a hummingbird’s heart is the size of a pencil, or that it beats ten times per second. After I read the first sentence, I was instantly interested to see what more the author had to say. He got the name, Joyas Valdoras, from a reference by early Spanish settlers. It means flying jewels. They called these creatures flying jewels because they had never seen anything like them before. They would fly around quickly all day, reproducing and collecting nectar. Doyle then goes on to add more facts about hummingbirds and their incredible hearts. Hummingbirds can fly up to 500 miles without stopping to rest, however they can get burned out. Whenever humming birds get burned out, it can become…
