What Does Music Mean To Me
Music is a five letter word that could mean so much to one person, while meaning so little to somebody else. To me, music is where I flourish; music is where I learn to find myself and learn to understand others. I get so lost in music, both listening and playing, that I find myself absent from my own reality for hours on end. Listening to music is mesmerizing, in a sense, in which I always find myself discovering new and intriguing genres, sounds and musicians. Music is so captivating to me because there is always something new and exciting to find; nothing is ever the same. For instance, nobody has the same exact voice while singing or the same exact style of bass playing. Similarly, there are always different renditions of songs to play on various different instruments. Being both a piano player and a guitar player, learning how to perform a song and perfecting it is an incredibly fulfilling feeling, in the least. Another reason that music is easily entrapping to me is because it is encompassed with deeper, unknown meaning. I take a passionate interest in the backstory of bands, their members and the significance of their lyrics. My Dad could have a conversation about music for hours on end, and somehow it always comes full circle despite all of the twists and turns it takes along the way. He has taught me about a variety of different genres, bands, musicians, and stories over the past 17 years of my life. These personal experiences have broadened my interests in music. In middle school I was in choice voices, which was a special singing group for people who excelled in singing. When I went to high school I stayed in the same program and even became senior section leader of my choir, conducting different songs at our concert and being in charge of different performances. During my childhood I was part of the choir at my church, and performed during the different holiday masses.…

It is hard to really understand the “what” and “how” of today’s modern music with out stepping back and looking at it from a point of view of society as a whole. The “what” is still the same as in centuries past, which is "simply” the process of understanding the complex world of the human conscience. However, the “how” has recently changed due to instant global connectivity unfortunately making the answer: to do so in the quickest manner possible. Yet, knowing that the “what” has not altered over time then it is safe to say that music is still pursuing the understanding of what it is to be alive. So when you ask the question, “what happens when the music stops?” you are taking on the oldest question in human existence. That question being, what happens when we die? A person who is deceased is no longer a physical aspect of the world but his or her experiences will still live on through the people they have touched. This is a crazy idea considering none of this is at all real in a physical sense. Through this reasoning we can come to the assumption that music is the Rosetta Stone for our mind; taking the impossible to describe and making it tactile and thus able to be acted upon.…
