In John Irving's “A Prayer For Owen Meany”, the raw heart behind one struggling with acceptance due to appearance is demonstrated . Owen Meany is a touching young man who is very intelligent yet extremely judged due to his appearance. Owen is unique because he breaks beauty standards and is completely comfortable in his own skin. Many people in modern society struggle with appearance and acceptance which is often the root of most eating disorders, depression, and body issues. The beauty industry has such a grip on society that most people find themselves wanting to be taller, skinnier, tanner, or blonder, all while claiming to be comfortable in their own skin. People have fallen into the trap that…
There has been so much controversy over the bobbed-hair craze that I feel I ought to put some of the world right, as to my side of it at least. I do not claim to be the first person to wear bobbed hair; in fact, I believe there are a number of people who, like myself, picture Joan of Arc with shorn locks! There have been several periods in history when women wore short hair. It is easier to be the first person to do a thing than the first to introduce it, and I believe I am largely blamed for the homes wrecked and engagements broken because of clipped tresses. I do not wish to take the blame, because in a great number of case I find the responsibility…

Imagine a place where the grass is short and wavy. Where the wind blows but, only slightly. Where the sun glistens off the ATV’s windshield as you cruise down the hill to set up the flag and the rigid ceramic target. Now, you drive back up to the top of the hill, adrenaline and excitement coercing through your veins. You grab the rifle out of the hard protective case. You admire the rifle’ smooth, precision edges its long, smooth barrel made of perfict steel. You take a deep breath through your nose and exhale out your mouth as you lie prone on the soft plush ground. As you look through the rangefinder you can see the dew on the grass a mile away at the foot of your target. You set the zero with eight firm…
Just imagine dying, and in a split second, seeing your short life flash before your eyes. You would then have the chance to fully comprehend and evaluate your life. Were you truly happy with your life or were you completely miserable? The film American Beauty, written by Alan Ball and produce by Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks, takes a closer look at two ordinary American families. The film exposes your typical, middle-class suburban American home and slowly uncovers all of the abnormalities that lie within. The two families, and their relationships with friends, neighbors, and co-workers are analyzed very closely. The film also takes a closer look at every individual as one and the purpose of their lives as individuals. The film focuses on one character, Lester, who feels like has no control over his life and no say in his family. Lester has many people who affect his life: Carolyn the wife, Jane the rebel teenage daughter, Ricky the next-door neighbor, Ricky's dad Frank, the ex-marine, and Jane's cheerleader friend Angela. As the film progresses, it is seen how these individuals' personalities intervene in each other's lives and by the end their real persona comes out, instead of the false individual they had pertain to be. The movie begins with camcorder footage of a teenager reclining on bed, complaining about her father, who is socially weird and ordinary. The man with the camcorder then asks, "You want me to kill him for you?" The teenager girl pauses for moment, and then says, "Yeah, would you?" The film then begins with Lester, the narrator of the film and father of the teenage girl complaining about him at the beginning. "In less than a year," he says to the audience, "I'll be dead. Of course, I don't know that yet. And in a way, I'm dead already." The beginning of the film hints at the mess in Lester's family and the death that is going to occur. Lester and Carolyn Burnham are on the outside, a perfect husband and wife, in a perfect house and in a perfect…
As a young girl I always wanted people to play with my long, straight, blonde hair. My mother as well as my aunts would fix my hair to match whatever I was wearing. Whether it was a bow, clips, tiara, or braids I seemed to always have something in my hair. As I got older I knew something was changing, and I was not sure if I would like it. When you are in a military family you have to be somewhat okay with moving and change, but I have never liked change.…
It’s amazing how much a trip to the barber shop can mean to a boy. There is so much that a child can notice and think about. In the story “David’s haircut”, David is taken to the barber shop by his dad. The event of getting their hair cut together has smoothened out to being pure routine for the father and the son. When David was a child David’s dad used to chase David around, and pretend that he would cut his ears off. At the barbershop David is getting an insight into how the grown-up life is. The things David notices at the barbershop brings meaning to the story. In the following essay I intend to analyze the symbolisms in “David’s haircut”. I will try to understand what David is feeling about growing older and maybe not being a child anymore.…
Last Christmas, I spent 5 fun-filled days and 4 magical nights in Disneyland. Daily weather in Anaheim was beautiful. The driveway leading to the park entrance was lined with tall palm trees as they stretched to the heavens in the blazing sunshine.…
In Idiosyncrasies of a Young Blonde Woman, Eça de Quieroz, the author, offers his insight on how gender roles operate within the relationship between men and women. In each of the relationships depicted by Quieroz, the common and underlying theme revolves around the tendency of men to engage in romantic relationships, solely on the basis of a woman’s aesthetic beauty. Furthermore, by engaging in these types of superficial relationships, men are ultimately entailed to face harsh repercussions. By reiterating this theme in each of his stories, Quieroz manifests the notion that men have been naturally trained to objectify women. By judging women exclusively on their exterior features, rather than on their interior values, men are not regarding women as human beings, but rather as inanimate objects. By ignoring the characteristics of women, men are also prone to become victims of the negative traits in women. Lastly, Quieroz purports that in order to expunge this ignorant habit of objectifying women, men must endure a shocking, yet enlightening, experience in which they are exposed to and victimized by the negative characteristics of women.…
My grandmother's house has a very special place in my heart. I lived with my grandmother for many years when I was little. Her house always seemed to have something about it that set it apart from all the rest. When walking in the front door of her house, there is a stairway as long as the Red River. It leads to the main hallway of the house. The strong smell of cigarette smoke would tickle my nose by the time I made it to the hallway.…
Descriptions of beauty are thrown at us everyday in various and opposing views. While many people stay with the belief that beauty is internal, society’s view of beauty is propelled at us from every angle. Just turn on the television, open a magazine, or surf the web and you will find yourself bombarded by the idea that being sexy and being beautiful are synonyms. Critics argue that this view of beauty is causing our women and even some men to alter their bodies in damaging ways. While I agree that the way today’s society views is damaging and unrealistic, but I also do not believe this is a new occurrence. Throughout history various societies have caused their subjects to do damaging and dangerous things all for the sake of what they called beauty. Beauty has become superficial and a term that is dangerous and used as a weapon to control the mindsets of others.…
Beauty is one of the most prevalent themes in the world. But what is beauty exactly? According to the Oxford Dictionary beauty is A combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. Based on the definition, one would assume that beauty is only on outward appearance but that statement is false. Beauty is not only appearance but it is also what people cannot see. Beauty is about being beautiful on the inside not just the outside. The media has fooled so many people into thinking the opposite.…
Hydroplane racing is the most amazing feeling in the world if you like the feeling of speed and the roaring sound of an engine behind you. My family is huge into racing and hydroplane boats are just one of them. Just stepping on to the smooth, glossy, deck of a freshly painted boat on a hot summer day sends shivers down my spine. There isn’t a better picture in my mind then a summer trip going to a boat race in a different state. The excitement of knowing you’re going to get out of the state, with all the last minute engine checks and making sure you’re not forgetting any tool you may think you will need before hitting the open road. The drive is always the best just relaxing lounging around in the R.V. and taking time to visualize the sounds, smells, course, and of course the people that you will be spending your next three days with. Nothing there but open water and the campers, roughing it in what we call the sticks of the summer with your good friends.…
It is quite evident as you walk around the streets of almost any city or town in America that the line between what was once considered the black style of dress and the white styles has become less and less evident. This is especially true with the younger kids in junior high and high school. The baggy pants and shirts with labels and bright colors that were once reserved for the inner city black and Latino kids, are now being worn by whites in wealthy suburban neighborhoods.…
