When I stop and fathom my place in this world,
it surprises me a bit to know God has “assigned role to the strong and the weak, the spectacular and the obscure and the multitudinous and the few” (Kidner, 1973, p. 82). Verses 3 and 4 make me reflect on the intricate ways He created the heavens, the earth and human beings and I was part of the plan. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, he moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them” (BibleGateway, 1993)? I have a role to fill for God and I am the only person who can fill it. This need for Him is placed in each of us at birth, in our bones, our muscles and our cells. Nothing God has planned is meaningless. His creation can only be described in one word, majestic. When I grasp what He has done, it inspires me to take a step back and worship Him. Words can’t describe all of His glory, but it fills my heart with pure joy and reverence. His incredible detail and splendor is in everything and I want to give thanks, glory and honor to that each and every day just as David says in verse 9, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth” (BibleGateway, 1993)!
His majestic glory is crowned upon each of us even though we are fallen which shows “God and His Grace” (Kidner, 1973, p. 85). If it weren’t for that grace, I would not have my relationship with God. God cares for me and calls me to fulfill His purpose on this earth in spite of my sins. Kidner says it perfectly by saying, “For man’s dominion over nature, wonderful though it is, take second place to His calling as servant and worshipper” (Kidner, 1973, p. 85). I may have authority over nature, but God has authority over me. My priority is to worship God and follow His path, not mine. When I accepted Christ into my life, I gave up my control and let God take control. Although I may accomplish remarkable feats in my life, they are not truly achieved by me. They are accomplished because of God. This Psalm humbles me and makes me step back and fully realize the awe of God. He is the majestic creator of all and without Him, nothing is truly possible in this world.
