What Does She Mean When She Might Buy Groceries By Makkai

Makkai uses similes for explicitly comparing two unlike things. In stanza four she describes the aggressiveness and the carelessness of the character’s mom. In this stanza, the character says, “She would say, grasping my face, twisting it this way and that, as if it were a cabbage she might buy.” (4, 14). When people buy groceries, they usually check the vegetables aggressively. People would often look at the grocery through different points of views, in order to see what the condition of the grocery is. The poet uses real-life situations for explaining the mom’s actions. The mom’s actions prove how she does not favor her daughter’s appearance. It also proves that the mom wants to change her daughter so that her daughter would be accepted
