The red balloon that Nia hands over to Bobby symbolizes her childhood in this novel. I chose this because balloons are something that make little kids happy, and also a second reason is that she is still a kid/teen and she wants that kid side back. my third reason is a balloon will float away if you let go so try to have a tight grip and don't let anything in between. The balloon could symbolize as love or being mean, but Nias childhood is mostly over now that she is having a baby. When you are about to deal with a hard situation like Nia and Bobby you have to mature, and that is very difficult when you are only fifteen or sixteen. This is important because it shows maturity.…

Another symbol in the book is the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckelburg on the Oculist’s sign in the city Valley of Ashes where Myrtle lives. Death is always around us; it's on every corner, in every room, completely unavoidable, yet somehow it still takes many of us by surprise. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” written by Scott F. Fitzgerald, the symbols for death are everywhere, yet aren’t bright in the light, making the tragic losses of those within the book unexpected and take us by surprise even though foreshadowed. From the seasons that occur, to the tired eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, and even the gloomy Valley of Ashes. Death is hanging there and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Fitzgerald shows us that death is discretely around us all the time and can happen to anybody at any moment.…

What is the American dream? If you were to look up the definition, you would see it defined as “a life of personal happiness and material comfort as traditionally sought by individuals in the U.S.1” The question of whether or not the American dream is an illusory goal is explored throughout the novel, and with Fitzgerald’s markedly bleak conclusion on the achievement of the American dream, many readers are left skeptical. Can this life of personal happiness and comfort ever be truly achieved? Is there a certain element of illusion that goes into any supposed fulfillment of this dream? More importantly, what is the price that must be paid in our attempts at achieving this dream?…
