What Does The Bible Say About Abnormality Analysis
Based on your understanding of a Christian world view, are we normal or abnormal?
I believe that we live in an abnormal world and are abnormal because the once-perfect creation is now affected by sin and the Curse. According to the biblical account in Genesis, tragedy struck with the fall of mankind with a devastating impact on every aspect of creation. As Paul states in Romans 8:20 “… the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice.” Our world became an abnormal world. For the first time in human experience, brokenness and difficulty were introduced. The effects continue to carry over today into our work, our world, our bodies, and our relationships with self, others, and God.

    The psychodynamic approach states that abnormality is caused by our libido (sexual desires) and our thantos (aggressive desires), these are our id desires. The id is an irrational part of our personality and demands satisfaction and is ruled by the pleasure principle. The superego embodies our conscious sense of right and wrong. The id, ego and superego work together, for example, if there was some money on a table with a person sat at the table with it, your id desire would be to just go over and take the money. Then your ego would step in and realise the constraints of reality and tell you to wait until no one is looking and then take the money. However, your superego would then step in and tell you that it is wrong to steal and you shouldn’t do it and that your parents taught you not to steal. Abnormality stems from an imbalance in these three things, for example, anxiety disorders can be caused by an over developed superego.…

    One definition of Abnormality is deviation of Social Norms. Social norms are accepted ways of behaving within a society. They are the unwritten rules that members of a society regard as being normal and acceptable, and any deviation from them can be regarded as abnormal behaviour. Examples include ways of dressing, such as women wearing feminine clothing and men wearing masculine clothing, not appearing naked in public, saying 'please' and 'thank you', opening doors for women and elderly people etc. Social norms may, however, vary between cultures - clothing is an example of this as some African tribes wear very little clothing whereas Western cultures keep certain areas of the body covered at all times.     Deviation from social norms is a definition of abnormality. The word ‘deviation’ in this definition is referring to deviant behaviour (behaviour which is considered anti-social or undesirable by the majority of society members). In society there are social norms (standards of acceptable behaviour that are set by the social group). These standards are often in place for good reason.
