Advances in technology and scientific method over the last 25 years have provided new evidence which disproves the original theory that Otzi, the iceman, may have fallen, injured himself and died from hyperthermia. High resolution CT scanning as well as new scientific techniques which allow for the analysis of blood, tissue and DNA have resulted in entirely different evidence-based theories. Evidence now suggests that Otzi died violently when an arrowhead severed the subclavian artery in his left shoulder. Moreover, other evidence exists to support the theory that a blow with a heavy object to the back of his skull serious bleeding and damage to brain tissue. Furthermore, an …show more content…
Moreover pollen in his body provided evidence that he had travelled from the valley to the mountain where he died within 24 hours of his death. In this paper I will examine all of the evidence from a number of sources to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of Otzi the iceman.
Many scientists now agree that the primary cause of death was a tear in the subclavian artery which is a major artery carrying blood from Otzi’s heart to his left arm. The tear was caused by an arrowhead lodged in Otzi’s left shoulder and corresponded with a cut in his coat. It is estimated that the arrow was fired from below. The wound resulted in severe bleeding which within two minutes caused a severe heart attack and death. A CT scan performed in 2005 first revealed the wound. Source A, Dr Thomas Bonfert, a radiologist and anthropologist, confirmed this and said that in addition severe damage to a major nerve …show more content…
The killer/killers yanked out the arrow to cover their tracks. For similar reasons the killer/killers did not take any of Otzi’s possessions, including the valuable and distinctive copper-bladed axe the appearance of such a remarkable object in the possession of a villager would automatically implicate its owner. Source H, Gary Rodgers, a retired homicide detective and coroner says that the position in which Otzi was found with his arms outstretched in a hyperextended position was unnatural and thinks that someone placed the body in this position after death Additionally Gary Rodgers also mentions the fact that the body was in excellent condition and had not been damaged by predators, scavengers, or insects. This means that it had been covered with snow soon after death. He believes that this may have been done in an attempt to conceal the body. Furthermore, Gary Rodgers believes that thirty different pollens in Otzi’s body from the food and water he consumed as well as the air he breathed prove that he had travelled from the valley floor to the top of the pass where he died within a 24 hour period. Evidence suggests that Otzi was fleeing from the killer/killers. Furthermore, the fact that the arrow that killed him was fired from
