When Annie is giving lessons to her pupil, Helen often fights with her. When Helen and Annie are alone in the kitchen, "HELEN retaliates with a round-house fist that catches ANNIE on the ear, and ANNIE'S hand leaps at once in a forceful slap across HELEN'S cheek" (Gibson 55-56; act 2) she shows Helen who is in charge. Consequently, when Helen is upset and is having tantrums, she reacts in a physical way. When this happens, Annie must be prepared so that she can express her control over Helen. Next, "Annie and Kate are talking in a room while Helen is playing with the sewing card and needle. When Annie attempts to take the sewing card away from her, Helen stabs her with the sharp needle. Kate gives Helen a piece of cake and Annie abruptly argues why she rewarded Helen for stabbing her" (Gibson 45; act 2) shows how the Keller family treats Helen. Kate's immediate response was to give Helen the sweet, which interferes with what Annie is teaching Helen.
