What Explains the Rapid Growth in the Internet?

In these few centuries, the broadcasting industries have a few significant transformations. The broadcasting radio industry expanded rapidly in 1920s until the born of television service in 1936. However, the born of broadcasting television service did not influence broadcasting radio industry very much. In fact, the real challenger of broadcasting industries is Internet, which was growth rapidly in these two decades. This essay is mainly divided into two main sections, firstly it will discuss the main reasons that explaining the rapid growth of Internet in terms of the technology circumstances. Then the essay will argue whether the growth of internet will cause the death of broadcast media.

Since 'the internet is a vast global interconnection of some 100,000 computer networks around the world all of which use a common set of technical protocols (called Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocols of TCP/IP) in routing data across those networks' (Pavilk. J, 1998, pp29), the ubiquity of personal computers can be considered as one of the reasons in explaining the rapid growth of the Internet. The first personal computer was available on the market on 9 September 1975 from IBM, which cost from US$8975 to US$19,975 according of

However, as this new technology become more and more common in the society, the price of the personal computer become more affordable and reasonable to the public so that more and more people can pay for a personal computer. By the mid-1990s, 35 of all US households had a computer; this represented about 10 million machines. By 1996, the figure had risen to about 22 million (Dearnley, J Feather, J, 2001, pp30). In another words, the personal computers popularisation greatly enlarges the network of Internet as more people have a computer, the fundamental needs for Internet, to get online. As Kitchin, R suggests, with the increase in the number of personal computers, the potential

Through the past several decades the advancement of technology has evolved. Among one of the advancements was the Internet. The Internet is a worldwide of networks connecting millions of computers. Through the Internet countries are able to exchange data, news and opinions. It started in the 1960’s when the internet was originally being used for government which later evolved to the world (Computer history museum, 2006). Over the past forty years the internet has changed technology of computers and how the world communicates, online banking, social networking, and online shopping. The Internet we know today grew from seeds planted by the U.S. Government. The Department of Defense issued a twenty thousand dollar contract on December 6, 1967 for the purpose of studying the design and specification of a computer network (Internet History from ARPANET to Broadband, 2007). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANet (Computer history museum, 2006). The ARPA laid the groundwork which later became the internet. By 1992 the Internet has one million hosts (Ganna, 2006). Through the years the Internet has changed the way people live and run businesses. My project will walk through the discovery and evolution of the Internet.…

When Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made object that is sent into the space to orbit the earth, on October 4,1957, the United States was forced to create an invention that would surpass the sputnik technology. In February 1958, the United States formed a research team named Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), which would help the United States to be ahead in technology field. This is where the innovation of Internet started. ARPA played an important role in developing the Internet. With the help of the knowledge of packet-switching theory, the setting-up of nodes (hosts), the sending of electronic messages, Internet gradually came alive. Internet eventually expanded in 1980s and grew bigger and bigger by the easy access from personal computers and modems. When WWW (world wide web) was introduced in 1991, Internet development was unstoppable since people do not need to know the complex commands to use Internet. They only need a WWW browser to use Internet. Later on, World Wide Web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera are developed and they help us navigate the web pages. From there, the growth of Internet has been expanding and…

The existence of many sophisticated computer systems and various innovations that we find in this Information Age justifies the age old saying that necessity is the mother of all inventions. The need to share information in a so called ‘global network’ and man’s desire to communicate from long distances called for the birth of the World Wide Web (formerly known as ARPANET). With the advent of the internet, many of the…

Working with Internet does not mean just browsing www and sending and receiving e-mails. The Basic Structure of the Internet was developed through last 30 years of existence of the Internet. The Internet is a heterogeneous worldwide network consisting of a large number of host computers and local area networks. The Internet uses the TCP/IP suite of protocols. This allows the integration of a large number of different computers into one single network with highly efficient communication between them. This way, the user can access information on all kinds of host computers from a desktop PC, Macintosh, or whatever he/she has available. TCP/IP, the communication standard underlying the Internet, originates from work done at the US-Department of Defense in the late 1960s. The first version of the Internet was built in 1969 and consisted of just four computers. In 1982 a set of specifications and protocols have been implemented, which became known as TCP/IP in reference to their two major elements, the "Transmission Control Protocol" and the "Internet Protocol". The development and implementation of TCP/IP stimulated a massive growth process for the Internet. "By late 1987 it was estimated that the growth had reached 15% per month and remained high for the following two years. By 1990, the connected Internet included over 3,000 active networks, over 3,000 active networks, and over 200,000 computers. By January 1992 the number of hosts on the Internet was 727,000, doubling about every 7 months. Various groups of users are connected to the Internet: universities and other educational institutions, government agencies, the military, and at an increasing number private businesses.…
