Description
Anthony Bourdain went to Marseille to explore all of what the second largest city of Fance has to offer. At his arrival, he was met with Chef Eric Ripert from the restaurant: “Le Chevalier de France” which means France’s knight. Bourain talks about how the food is delicious but unfortunately the city is victim of its bad reputation and bad history. at the closet restaurant. They got to taste Marseille’s famous fish broth and had cheese and wine for dessert. Surprisingly, the iconic dish for Marseille is pizza. According to Bourdain, Marseille is the pizza truck capital of France. In the video, Boudain and Chef Ripert spend some time cooking pizza in a truck for customers waiting in a line. Bourdain also drove to the countryside to test the other food places that offered vegetables, fruits and others condiments. Then, Bourdain went to a beach area called “Calanques” where enormous cliffs surrounded the water that people where swimming in. Bourdain could observe from there how people could jump from the cliff to the water without hesitation. He talks about how that the view was extremely beautiful and how the people were enjoying it. Bourdain concluded that Marseille is unfortunately under rated and under visited considering all the wonderful destinations that he explored there. Few people know about the wonders of Marseille.
Interpretation
Marseille is a beautiful city of France that I came to appreciate as I watched the video of Bourdain. The restaurants are welcoming, the people are friendly and the environment there is peaceful and calm. I could see myself living there in all honesty. The message that the video sent to me is that Marseille is one of the oldest city of France that people avoid due to its unfortunate history but little do they know that it has changed for the better and now it is a really great city with lots of attraction for tourism. I was convince by Bourdain’s video that Marseille is place worth visiting and spending some time in France. I believe that the city deserves a chance to be appreciated for what it has to offer and should not be judge for what has happened in it in the past. History is behind us and the present is what should be evaluated to determine a city’s value. Despite its history of instability and insecurity, I am sure that improvement have been made to make the lives of its residents better. From what I saw in the video, the culture of the “Marseilliens” (the people who live is Marseille) is not very different from the culture of most French people. In their culture, they value the government and take great pride in their nation and history. From my perspective, Marseille is one of the best parts of France that is simply underrated.
Evaluation
Just like Bourdain stated in his video, I believe that the days of Corsican mafia are over, it was one of the major influences on Marseille’s bad reputation.
Now that the mafia is no longer there, I believe that the city is changing for the better and growing more and more every day. With the mixture of different cultures, people from Nigeria, Italy, and Spain bring their contributions to the culture of Marseille. I believe that the diversity of the people of Marseille makes the city even more special and different from other cities of France.
All and all, Marseille is the oldest and second largest city of France with lots to offer. It is a great city that I would love to visit any time that I get the opportunity. Bourdain’s video changed my view and helped me learn more about Marseille. I am glad that I know about it now and I hope that more people will visit Marseille and discover the benefits of living in this beautiful
city.
