The definition of feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. In other words, it is the belief that women should be treated as equals to men as well as promoting gender equality in all areas of our everyday lives. Although feminism has come a long way in the past decades, from desegregation in work places, to voting rights, there is still more work to do as the fight for gender equality is far from over.
What have women gained since the age of feminism?
Feminist movement such as women’s liberation movement have achieved much in their fight for gender equality and women’s rights. Feminist and activist, Betty Friedan said, “What used to be the feminist agenda is now an everyday reality. The way women look at themselves, the way other people look at women, is completely different than it was thirty years ago. Our daughters grow up with the same possibilities as our sons.” Western feminists have done much in the progression of women’s rights with movements that have accomplished goals that we see evidence of everyday, such as the women’s suffrage movement, which allowed women to vote, and the women’s liberation movement. There are no laws that state women are not allowed to drive but this fact is widely accepted in their society. It is not common for girls in school to play sports, this strips away their fundamental law to enjoy, play or even watch sports. By seeing this example of gender inequality we can see how privileged we are, and that we often take advantage of this. I think that it is important to remember that the society we live in is not perfect and free of gender inequality, but we must help other countries to get to the same level as us if we really do support women’s rights and want to achieve gender
