8.2 Work design or classification 8.2.1 Work Environment

8.2.2 Examples of Duties Work Design Department
• Resolves complex hardware and software problems related to rail operations including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Automatic Train Control, Security Systems, and Emergency Management Systems
• Make design review, acceptance and reliability testing, failure analysis, and installation of new software, hardware, and electronic control systems
• Provides lessons in design engineers for incorporation in design change packages for upcoming rail systems
• Designs and develops software application tools and utilities for diagnostics purposes, database modification, and CRT display enhancements
• Can develops database applications for tracking hardware or software problem reports, configuration and document control
• Can performs system administration functions on network systems hosted at the Central Control Facility
• Performs analysis on complex hardware configuration changes driven by user requirements
• Analyzes operational impact of software changes and oversees software maintenance and upgrades
• Provides technical support during system integration of newly developed electronic rail control and communication

8.3.2 Selection
This is to ensure that the best person or people are appointed to the role or roles using effective, fair and equitable assessment activities.
Railways are labor intensive. The railway business is complex and requires a wide range of technical skills and crafts like welding, machinery repair, civil engineering, drivers, electrical and mechanical engineering, and medical personnel, to name a few. Plus, most railways operate 24 hours per day/ 365 days per year. So, railways must pay enough to attract high-quality skilled staff and railways must develop safety programs and ensure that all employees are scheduled, properly trained, vetted, and observing safety protocols at all times.

8.4 Performance Management
In order to improve the performance, the process for its monitoring and analyzing has to be described and implemented. Implementation of the train performance management on corridor level together with the domestic one will complete the whole process of performance management in railway business.
