What is a mask? You probably know what a physical mask is, but what about a metaphorical ‘mask’? People use these ‘masks’ when they are hiding their intentions, or using a fake persona. You’ve probably done this many times in your life, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. People can wear a ‘mask’ to do something

In the story, a kid named Victor is trying to impress a girl named Teresa on his first day of 7th grade. He does this by in the Spanish class he has with Teresa, he does this by pretending to know the language he’s supposed to be taught. By doing this, he is putting on the fake identity of a person who knows Spanish. His teacher quickly breaks through the fake identity, but sympathizes with him since he was in a similar situation in college. This is an example of someone putting on a ‘mask’ for their own gain, and resulting in positive results, without negatively impacting others. Another example of Victor, putting on a fake ‘mask’ is when he is trying to get attention from other girls in his class. Victor realized that male models in magazines always seemed to smirk in their photos. With this knowledge, he decides to smirk at the all the girls' he sees. His friends start to do the same thing, and they end up succeeding in attracting the girls attention. This is yet another example of people having positive results from wearing a mask. Some people rebuttal this knowledge by saying that these positive results are only temporary, and it would come back to bite them, such as Teresa finding out Victor doesn’t speak Spanish. This is simply not true, if you take the proper precautions against this, it’s likely to not happen. An example of this would be, in the story, …show more content…
A story that largely incorporates this theme is the story ‘Charles’ by Shirley Jackson. In the story, it is told from the perspective of the mother that her son Laurie, comes home from preschool every day and talks about the ‘Exploits’ of a boy in his class named Charles. The boy Charles is, for lack of better words, a rude, insolent, disrespectful, jerk, with no respect for his classmates or teachers. Laurie continues to talk about Charles bad deeds every day, until Laurie’s parents decide to meet Charles parents, at a PTA meeting. The parents meet the teacher, who says there is no Charles in her class, meaning that Laurie must have made this fake identity. This shows that Laurie was able to wear a ‘mask’ by using this fake identity, and had positive results by avoiding trouble. Laurie’s was also received a secondary beneficial result from being able to tell his parents what he did, without receiving punishment. A significant group of people would say that Laurie would be punished for the things he did and as a result the ‘mask’ created a negative result. This is an incorrect statement because, since the teacher never bothered to send an email or a letter to his parents telling them about the horrible things he did, they probably won’t tell his parents now. This is yet

“In The Cemetery where Al Jolson is buried” by Amy Hempel uses the word masks throughout the story to convey guilt, fear and unacceptance of death. The first mention of the word mask is in the beginning of the story. We are just beginning to understand that Hempel is describing two people in a hospital, the narrator is visiting her friend who is sick. They are both wearing masks, the narrator checks to make sure that she is still breathing and that she is not “ used to the mask yet.” The friend has her mask hanging loose, a “pro by now.” The fact that the narrator describes her friend at being a “pro” and the fact that the narrator is not used to her masks, tells us that the narrator has not been to visit before.…

The mask is a form of deception or illusion. Sometimes, it can be worn as both. It hides the true emotions of slaves, keeping the slave master from knowing what is going on in their minds. The mask also allows the slave to have an identity without the master's detection. The mask gives the illusion that the slave is exactly how the masters believe, ignorant, incapable of true emotion, and unable to think for themselves.…

I can go on and on about this one. We all have images of ourselves in our mind of where we want to be, who we want to be, and what we want to relay to people. But because we are not where we want to be or where we picture ourselves to be, some people might try to mask it to reflect how they want people to see them. Now don’t get me wrong, the meaning of facades is not talking about putting your best foot forward, making a good first impression at an interview, on a date, marketing an item, or things of that nature. A facade speaks on being deceptive with the intent to manipulate others perception on how they see you. Ericsson gave us a definition from Webster’s dictionary of lying. A lie is a false statement or action especially made with the intent to deceive or anything that gives or is meant to give a false impression. Sure we don’t want others to see our hurt, shameful secrets, regret, pain, misfortune, and anything else that doesn’t paint a happy successful image of ourselves. But sweeping it under a rug, not facing your truth, and putting on an “it’s all good” façade is a recipe for painful living that will give birth to more lies and deception that can sadly ruin the human spirit and tare a person to pieces mentally and spiritually. It can ruin you all because it is too much suppression and division with…

Identity is often misinterpreted in common films and novels. These originated from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night about a girl named Viola, who washed ashore and dresses as a man so she can raise money to return to her land. One of the films that is based off the idea of deception through appearance is Some Like it Hot, two men searching for employment in a band dress as girls, cloaking themselves from a mob. Deception in appearance is common throughout these two stories in several ways.…

A theme of the story is the societal standards and it's effects on our behavior and disposition. Important to note is the context of the story; it begins in 1959 in a high school. Important are societal views on sexuality and the traditionally collectivist-type society of high school settings where there is safety in numbers and danger in sticking out. Sunny's mask was her nickname. As Barbara, she is plain, but as sunny she is pure, happy, and too good to be true. She was involved and "normal" and lived up to the expectations her society her bound her to by her nickname. Zachary's mask is his appearance, behind which, he hid his sexuality.…

In The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the characters are not really who they seem to be since they disguise themselves to hide their dirty deeds or to remain oblivious to those who are dubious. Everyone has a mask, a cover, a veil, it is a play that has a powerful theme, that the surface only shows so much revealed, in the opening scene. Masks provided the path to destruction for Macbeth but they also allowed for other characters to survive by disguising their true feelings toward the tyrant ruler.…
