ABC, Inc.: The Hiring Snafu
In today’s business world, most companies, like ABC, Inc., seek to expand their workforce to increase productivity and profitability. Through proper planning, time management and communication, the hiring of new trainees for ABC, Inc. should be a fairly easy process for its recruiter.
Employing new personnel can present various challenges for a recruiter if they fail to prepare properly. ABC, Inc.’s new campus recruiter, Carl Robins, has hired 15 new trainees for the Operations Department. Monica Carrolls, of Operations, will be their supervisor. Carl will need to: make sure that all necessary paperwork has been completed; schedule the

The main focal points of this analysis will show how poor preparation could affect the relationship between co-workers and new employees, as well as the company’s desire to expand its workforce.
ABC, Inc. had hired Carl only six months prior to him acquiring 15 new employees to work in Operations for Monica in early April. He had designated a target date for the new trainees to begin work in the month of July. By doing so, this has given Carl a three month period to execute all tasks associated with hiring new personnel. A couple of months have lapsed and Carl has realized that none of the necessary tasks have been performed on his part or the new trainees. There is only one month until the trainees are to begin work. Several weeks earlier, Monica expressed concern about the June 15th orientation and training date he had proposed. She realized that she had not heard anything further from him about the process or the new hires. Carl’s response implied that everything was being taken care of. Two weeks later, Carl discovers that the applicants’ documentation were incomplete. He further investigated to find that none of them had their drug screen performed and that there were only three orientation manuals; in which all of them had pages missing. The training room where Carl had

A few options to consider are to perform the elements of the hiring process in phases, consider moving the target dates back by a couple of weeks, or to stagger start the new hires.
Performing the hiring process in phases is a great alternative because like tasks are grouped together aiding in the workflow. However, this approach becomes ineffective if time is of the essence. Moving the target dates back is advantageous as it gives both the newly employed and the recruiter more time to carry out the tasks in a timelier manner. Staggering the start date would only work if Monica is able to run Operations half-staffed.
Communication
Communicating effectively within the workplace is an important element because people are what make the business operations happen. Organizational outcomes are reliant upon communication and the relationships developed between its personnel; how well they communicate with one another to accomplish the task at hand. According to Bardia, (2010) “It is a link between the employees and the management and serves the purpose of channelizing and streamlining the functions of the organization in an effort to achieve the business goals” (p. 27). The problem occurs when communication is not effective, causing the task to result in failure. Monica relayed underlying messages of doubt in Carl’s judgment, and possibly

As a new recruiter, Carl should have started preparing earlier for the orientation training to make sure everything could be completed in time and ask for help if he needed it. Because of lack of planning and scheduling, the training must be postponed until July when the training room will be available.…
