woman, marriage was shown as a huge role in their life. Bradstreet wrote a poem called “To My Dear And Loving Husband”. And in that poem she talks about how she is one with her husband. She and the other Puritan women believed that marriage was a gift sent from God. They respected that and knew that God was doing what he thought was best for them. She didn’t know how to express her gratefulness, so she put pen to paper and started writing more, and that was where her poetry came to play. She expressed her love for God’s gift in her writing. She then was wondering, if something bad were to happen to her, what would God do to keep her husband happy? What would God give to her husband? She had hoped that he would remarrying after she passes. Bradstreet thought about everything there was to think about. In another one of her poems, “Letter to Her Husband, Absent upon Public Employment” she wrote about how lost she was without her husband. She wrote that she was lonely and that everything was more clear when he was around. In most of Bradstreet’s poems, I can tell that she truly loved her husband. She cherished him and cared for him so much. She didn’t like when he was away, and her family could sense that she was upset as well. Her role of a Puritan women was to be a great mother, and a wife.
With that being said, she was supposed to cook dinner for the family, keep the house clean, take care of the children, and to love them. Also that goes for every Puritan woman. Children was also a gift from God. They were a huge blessings in their lives. She cared and love her children and her husband so much. Being a woman writer in this time, was not considered a role for the women. People often put her down and criticized her. Women should be a housewife, not a poem writer. They reading, writing, and telling was the men’s job. It wasn’t right for the Puritan women to do so. In most of Bradstreet’s poems, she wanted to encourage the roles of a Puritan women. She wanted her writing to explain the beliefs that all of the women had on the inside. Anne Bradstreet had a wonderful husband and 8 amazing kids. All she wanted to do was to be able to write poetry and not be criticized. She wanted the other women to see that they can do this! Yes they love their families, but it’s time they do something for themselves. Bradstreet was an inspiration and a role
model. Anne Bradstreet was one of the first poets to write something in an English version in the American colonies. She then had her brother-in-law take some of her many poems to England and they were published in 1650. It was named the title of “The Tenth Muse, Lately Sprung Up in America.” Tenth Muse was the first and only section of Anne Bradstreet’s poetry to be seen in her lifetime. She was so happy and grateful! She finally got her poems out to the open world! Bradstreet and her family then moved to Andover, Massachusetts. Anne was living her life to the fullest. She continued to live there until she passed in 1672. Some people may ask, “Why is Anne Bradstreet an important person?”, I would reply and say that she is very strong, independent, and inspiring woman. She dreamed of being a poetic writer, then she set her goals, and then she went for them. She chased her dreams. She is a a role model in todays society if I were to be asked. People criticized the Puritan women who wanted to write. She overcame them and went after her dreams. Anne Bradstreet was the first woman to be recognized for her words and she was the first woman to have her poems published as an English version of poetry.
