novel To Kill a Mockingbird, because he fought for an African American in an all white court. While in court Atticus is met with the very hard problem of challenging the word of a white men while defending the word of a black man. The problem arises not in having evidence proving Tom Robinson the African American in question for rape, but rather simply the fact that during the time and the situation he was in it would be very hard for him to win against a white man. This itself shows how hard Atticus would have to work just to have a chance at winning. Not only that but he had the opinion of the majority of the town of Maycomb against him to with people calling him a “Negro Lover” and wanting him hanged for defending a black man.Atticus says, “The witnesses for the state, with the exception of the sheriff of Maycomb County, have presented themselves to you gentleman, to this court, in the cynical confidence that their testimony would not be doubted, confident that you gentleman would go along with them on the assumption -the evil assumption-that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber.”(Lee,___). This conversation between Atticus and the Jury exposes how courageous he is saying that to white people that do not agree with his ways at all. Atticus is the most courageous in the Novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Another reason for Atticus Finch is the the Most Courageous Character in To Kill Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, for being an excellent father to Jem and Scout. In the Novel he is always telling Scout not to use violence or prejudge people. Atticus says to Scout,”just keep your head high and your fist down.”(Lee,101). Atticus was explaining to scout about how to solve your problems. Many times in the 1930s people would chose violence and fighting to end every and any confrontation that came their way. But Atticus believes in talking and using words and being fair rather than shooting someone or punching them in the face. Atticus is a great father to Jem as well saving wanting to stay with his son rather than chasing after the person who tried to kill him. Atticus says,”I can't leave my boy, run out there for me please. This shows how Atticus was going to stay with his son no matter what through thick and thin. All in all Atticus is a very Courageous character because he is a great father that cares for his kids.
In conclusion, Atticus is the character that shows the most courage throughout the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee. Atticus Finch a very fair and kind Caucasian man back in the 1930s in Maycomb County. He is fighting for an African American man against a white man and his daughter accusing him of rape. Atticus knows it will be very hard to fight for him but he does it anyway. Atticus is truly the most courageous character in To Kill a Mockingbird, for doing what no one else dared to do.
