He fought for a man named Tom Robinson, he was accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell and at the time if a black person was accused of anything he/she would immediately go to jail. So in this case Tom Robinson was accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell and so would have been immediately guilty but Atticus fought his case. Atticus teaches his children to fight a case no matter who it is, no matter their skin color, religion, nationality, and even race in general. He teaches his children to respect everyone. He also teaches his children that a final decision must not be made through race but through facts and proof given in court. Atticus once said “If you had been on that jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man, so far nothing has interfered with your life, with your reasoning process.
