Baba knew that “Poison tongues would flap” if people found out that Hassan is truly his son, so in an attempt to protect his reputation Baba deceived everyone and let them believe that Ali was Hassan's father (146). Baba was too proud to let the community know his dirty secrets so, he withheld the truth from everyone, even though it meant lying and hurting his own sons. This showed that Baba put his pride and honor above everything else, including his sons. Which also explains some of his other actions in the book, like when he said “Thank you but I don't want [them].” to the eligibility officer about food stamps. Ironically Baba told Amir “When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth.” Meanwhile, he was deceiving Amir and Hassan about their biological connection. The hypocritical behavior displayed by Baba throughout the novel showed that he and Amir were more alike than initially thought. Both Amir and Baba tried their hardest to conceal secrets that they were ashamed of, even if it meant hurting ones that they love. Although both characters showed major character developments when they tried to atone themselves. Baba thought that by doing as many good things as he could, like: giving Hassan gifts, building an orphanage, and including Hassan in as many father-son activities as possible, that it would make up for the sins that he committed in earlier
