Critical thinking is imbedded into all aspects of nursing. Critical thinking is an incorporation of the nursing process, problem solving, scientific method, ethics, codes, laws, safety, quality, policies, procedures, and knowledge. Critical thinking is thought that has purpose and is utilized to find meaning in data. In other words, it is how nurses make decisions based on integration of various strategies. When facing a client situation, the nurse must gather data, look at the data, determine the significance of the data, and then determine what to do based on scientific method, ethics, codes, laws, etc. (As listed above) Many attribute critical thinking to common sense, but it is more than that; it is knowledge based decision making and problem solving.…

In a study by Giger and Davidhizar (1990), BSN nurses significantly outscore ADN nurses in the professional category. They are were more concerned with research, teaching and community assessment, whereas the ADN nurse was more concerned with the technical aspects of nursing care (Giger and Davidhizar, 1990). Critical thinking disposition skills of senior programs revealed that BSN students scored significantly higher on critical thinking. (Shin, 1998). Although, most people have some critical thinking skills, it is a skill that must be developed. In the BSN program this skill is learned through patient scenarios and critical thinking…
Critical thinking is the talent to rationally think. It includes the ability to involve in reflective and liberated thinking. While involved in critical thinking, you are able to understand the reasonable connection with ideas. You will also be able to identify, build, and evaluate opinions. Also, critical thinking helps you identify and find the importance in the ideas of what you are trying to figure out.…
In this reflection, I have utilized Gibbs (1988) Reflective cycle. This cyclical model is a recognized framework to assist with a critical reflection on practice. I chose to use this cycle because it will improve my nursing practice continuously, and learning from the experience for better and improved practice. Gibbs (1988) reflective model consists of six stages. Boyd and Fales (1983) offer a useful definition of reflection, suggesting that it is “the process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, and which results in a changed conceptual perspective.” According to Siviter, 2004, p165) explains that reflection is about gaining self-confidence, identifying when to improve, learning from own mistakes and behaviours, looking at other people’s perspective, being self aware and improving the future by from the past. However, having knowledge about reflection does not necessarily mean that nurses are able to use reflection in a meaningful way during practice. Self reflection helps nurses to learn about the actual practice of nursing and helps them to evaluate their own practice and performance. Reflection may also be prompted by more positive states, for…
One of the recent trends in the nursing profession in most, if not all, cultures is to produce, utilize, and practice research-based nursing care. Inherent in this goal is the continued development and testing of nursing theory. In order to utilize nursing theory appropriately it is important to know how to describe, analyze, and critique (evaluate) theory. While empirical testing of theory is important, it is but one part of the evaluation of theory. Meleis (1985) states that theory evaluation provides…
Nurses will use theories in their practice to help guide them through their daily tasks, patient assessments and also to help make and individualize patient goals and interventions to provide the best care. Nurses study theory as it helps assist the student in building their critical thinking skills. Theories provide a good foundation for clinical practice, improved communication between nurses, better patient care and guidance for research and education. When nurses comprehend and use nursing theory in their practice along with their intuition and compassion, they should become an efficient and strong nurse. All of these traits are important in our daily lives as nurses. Having these theories in place helps nurses to use their critical thinking skills in order to provide our…
Critical thinking involves applying a range of fundamental skills to a given situation in order to determine a satisfactory outcome or judgement. Research has shown that we begin to think critically from a young age and development can continue into adulthood. Core skills, along with dispositions and developing an ethos of ‘thinking about our thinking’, are seen to work together to advance critical thinking, whether it be through general or specific domain areas. Scientific thought uses many critical thinking skills and dispositions as a process of knowledge, seeking to aid scientific understanding. The role of educators and policy makers is to ensure that an understanding of critical thinking is developed and applied through carefully…

The experience I went through was the complete opposite of linear thinking. I had to dig deep into my cognitive abilities for each obstacle I was challenged with. There were times in which metacognition kicked in. For instance, while breastfeeding Madelyn, I would get anxious and question if she was okay. Should I stop feeding her or keep going? Is she turning blue or is it my imagination? Should I call the nurse over? Mental images of her not breathing replayed through my head. Metacognitive monitoring became habitual for me when it came to hearing the monitor alarms that the twins were hooked up to. I knew that the slightest stretch of the leg or that any movement encountered during a diaper change would falsely set off the alarms. It became…
Using the checklist in Box 3-2, reflect on your culture and how it might affect your critical thinking habits of the mind. Critical thinking is related to nursing care and practice because one needs to have a clear view of the patient information to know what will be the next action to take. In nursing is critical that one understand all the patient information in order to take the correct decision since one is dealing with human lives.…
