Ellen DeGeneres is a TV talk show host, actress, entertainer, comedian and LGBT rights activist best-known as the host of the popular daytime TV talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
DeGeneres was born on January 26, 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana.
She grew up in Metairie and attended the University of New Orleans to study communications, though she ultimately left after one semester to do clerical work at a law firm with her cousin and worked various odd jobs in the service industry to support herself.
DeGeneres started to do standup comedy in the late 1970s and soon found success, being named as the funniest person in the United States by Showtime in 1982 and touring nationally in the early 1980s.
Riding her early success as a standup comic, DeGeneres soon found work in the entertainment industry, breaking through with her popular sitcom TV shows Ellen from 1994 to 1998 and later The Ellen Show from 2001 to 2002. She’s best-known for her current role as the host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show since 2003 and previously starred in two sitcom TV shows, The Ellen Show from 2001 to 2002 and Ellen from 1994 to 1998. She also currently works as the host of the TV show Ellen’s Game of Games, which debuted on December 18, 2017.
In addition to her long and successful career in TV, DeGeneres has also worked in the film industry, appearing in films such as 1999’s EDtv, 2003’s Finding Nemo and 2016’s Finding Dory. She’s also eared money doing standup comedy, hosting prestigious awards shows such as the Academy Awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Grammy Awards and from being a judge on American Idol for its ninth season in 2010.
