Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City, Mexico on July 6,1907. She had Mexican and German decent but is defined more by her Mexican nationality. Kahlo started learning her artistic painting skills from an early age when her father gave her a paint set after a bus accident nearly killed her. This traumatic event is what is sparked her purpose into painting about her personal difficulties. According to Kaitlyn Beaver, author of “Frida Kahlo Artist Overview and Analysis,” “Kahlo …show more content…
spent hours studying herself, and more importantly, confronting existential questions raised by her trauma such as dissociation from identity, death, and interiority.” ( Beaver, 2017). She had a lot of pivotal moments in her life including a near death bus accident, contracting polio as a child, miscarriages, and the affairs her husband, Diego Rivera. She only had about 200 pieces of art work throughout her whole art career but she grew in popularity as she got older, traveling and showcasing her art work at different venues. One of her main styles of painting are self-portraits. Out of 143 paintings, 55 were self-portraits. There was a reason why she did paintings of herself frequently. Kahlo herself said, "I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best" (Frida Kahlo Biography,2011). This statement shows that she reflects herself through her works of art and more specifically her self-portraits. Although Kahlo had a very rough life starting from an early age and continuing through her marriage, the events that took place in her life prompted her to be successful artist and painter.
Personally, I like how Frida Kahlo uses techniques in her works of art by using her own life events and how she incorporates them through symbolism and metaphorical elements.
I also think she is interesting because of the life she had and how she reacted to her own personal difficulties. A painting by Frida Kahlo I found most interesting was, What I Saw in the Water, 1938. This was very intriguing to me because it has a lot of symbolism that represents each part of her life, whether it was a sad, happy, or traumatic experience. A big feature of Kahlo’s art work was also surrealism, her artwork did not have ever element of surrealism but had some images in her pictures that seemed to make no sense at all or was out of the ordinary, like abstract. What set her apart from being a surrealistic artist was that her weird, striking images had mean to it and was meant to be a symbol in some
way.

The Media of this painting is oil painting on canvas. In this painting there are symbols, metaphors, and abstract elements that all play together to represent her message in this artwork. The painting is about Frida Kahlo being heart broken by her husband, Diego Rivera, having an affair with her younger sister Christina. There is an obvious focal point which is Kahlo herself depicted in the middle with a rod that is impaled through her where her heart is supposed to be, this a metaphor of her being heart broken by what had happened but also as you see the two cupids on opposite sides of the rod sitting, looking as if they could be taking her love away that she use to have for her husband. The perspective of this painting is seen from the audience’s point of view as if Kahlo is staring right back at us and seeing from her emotion on her face she reflecting a look of sadness that the audience can feel. You can also see as the beach and the back round and the two dresses in the front both have visual balance. As the waves meet the shoreline and the two dresses hanging on opposite sides of Kahlo, it gives the audience a sense of balance from the look of the painting. One of the abstract elements in the artwork is the gigantic hear depicted behind her as it sits on the shore of the beach where streams of blood run out from. This is abstract because it is not something that is realistic and can be thought of being in real life, the giant heart is not realistic but serves as a symbol of her love being ripped apart by her husband cheating on her.
