The Kansas Jayhawks mascot was the first thing to catch my eye as I entered Allen Fieldhouse for the first time on January 20th, the day KU played against Baylor. The mascot was so big it stretched across the entire floor. Several other details seemed to catch my eye as well, like the glowing “KANSAS” letters that touched the wall next to the overpriced gift shop, the many show cases of KU basketball players and the illustrated sign that hung above the girls basketball show case that read, “Pay Heed, All Who Enter, Beware of the Phog”.…

The most popular sport in the south, football, is a game that stumbled out of rugby and soccer. In 1823, English soccer player, William Ebb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it, inspiring the students of Princeton to become involved in a sport they called “ball town”. The first football game was played on November 6th of 1869 in Brunswick, New Jersey between the Rutgers and Princeton. The game was observed by one-hundred spectators and the players wore no helmets or uniforms. The players kept score by giving a team one point each time the goal line was crossed. The Rutgers won the game with a final score of 6 to 4. Walter Camp, the father of American football, later evolved the rules of the game as a coach and athletic director…

I have chosen Centerville ISD as the school to complete my Field Experience 1 for this semester. Centerville Elementary has a different setup than the average school. Because of the low population, 1st-3rd grade classes are located in one building. Each class rotates throughout the day to three different teachers. Each teacher teaches two subjects. My mentor teacher, Mrs. Childress, teaches reading in the morning and science in the afternoon. The three teachers create a collaborative environment for the students. The small building has 4 classrooms, 1 is used as a computer lab/library for all the classes.…

There are many universities that offer concerts or recreational activities for students, and one of them is Miami Dade College. On April 19, 2017 the college offered a concert in which many of the student’s participated; indeed, professors and guests were there and helped with the event. The concert was about music and poetry, both of them were sang and with them, many instruments. Also, there were many people there and all of them were enjoying the event, as well as I did. Many famous songs were played as covers in the concert; songs like “Summer Time” by George Gershwin, and “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, as well other songs that were interpreted by professors and students. “Fly Me to…

The concert was labeled on youtube as a Bangladesh concert. The musical artists played Indian music, and there didn’t seem to be a composer. Every one just seemed to know how to play together. By being an active listener I learned that different cultures sometimes have very different musical styles. Most musical styles touch on all elements of SHMRGO. It was really neat to see how differently Indian music is put together. It’s obvious that they’re extremely talented musicians because they have to incorporate twice as many notes (semi-tones and quarter-tones) than whats typical to us, and they all did it so well. The type of instruments I think were used were the chordophones sitar, santoor, ektara, and the getnu. Also, I think either a bansuri, a venu, or a fiti was used (aerophones); and I’m almost positive that the dhad was played percussion wise. I think these instruments were played, but there were definitely a lot more instruments played than just these. The mood of concert definitely seemed like it was met to interpret happiness and excitement. As I mentioned, there was no one composer. However, the artists did communicate with each other through body language, and that was really interesting to watch play out.The Bangladesh concert performance was definitely interesting and educational, but for the most part it wasn’t pleasing to my ears, simply because I’m not accustomed to the style of music that was played. I completely respect the music that was played, and I honor that it’s different from the music that I listen to. To be frank, the pieces sounded like organized chaos. However, over it time it may become something I’d listen to for fun. Watching this concert definitely made me curious as to what different cultures think when they hear musical styles that are common to…
