Laurel is a white man who comes from California and his family his described as pickers in apple orchards and grape vineyards. Laurel is a black lady who is termed to be radical and works in creating a journal on racism and activism in Georgia. The story is set in the 1960s in the Deep South where cases of racism are high. Laurel comes to work for the journal and there is where he has an encounter with Annie. Annie is described as a 20-year old lady who is adventurous and is on the stage of exploring her sexuality (Walker 5).
When the two meet, they experience a big attraction between them which is mainly driven by the nature of their relationship especially at times when racism is a everyday thing. Laurel is obsessed with Annie who is also obsessed with him and this turns their activism to be about them. Laurel longs for Annie so much and is all …show more content…
she wants to have and explore. This love and longing is mainly driven by the fact that Laurel being a white man has never had any sexual relationship with a black lady. He sees Annie as something new which is forbidden but still wants to explore it. Laurel is so much in love with Annie that he at first lies to her about the wife whom he left behind back at home. Only guilt drives him to expose this to Annie on which is termed as their last night together.
After Laurel’s accident, Annie settles down gets married and bears a daughter. When Laurel recovers, after two years, he comes back to Annie’s life. This time with a different kind of love. He is more obsessed with her and though she tries to turn him away, each time she does so he further deteriorates. It is like his mind is at stand still and only reflects on the one week they had together before the accident. Laurel feels that Annie owes him her devotion especially due to the injuries he suffered in the accident. He is bitter that she married another man who he refers to as a Jew. He writes, “I guess you have a taste for the exotic though, I am not exotic. I am a cripple now with part of my brain in somebody’s wastepaper basket.” (Walker 77)
Laurel sees Annie’s blackness as his salvation and wants to own her and her body because of the loss of his brain. He tells he tells her that he always dreams of her body which is brown and warm compared to his which is white and cold. He feels that they can be happy together “black and beautiful and crippled and missing part of my brain.” (Walker 79)Laurel’s being entrapped in his lust for Annie, makes her divorce her then husband and goes to him. The problem is that Laurels obsession is so destructive that Annie later leaves him and goes back and apologizes to her husband whom she had already divorced and seek assurance (Werlock 30).
The path of this relationship from the meeting, to the auto accident to Annie’s divorce In the beginning of their love journey the two are introduced as belonging from different races.
Their relationship faces resistance from its conception. The two are attracted to each other and the attraction is driven by the adventure and great danger of being involved sexually. Everything goes on well for them until the accident occurs (Hitchcock and Kouidis 55). Laurel is disabled and hospitalized for a long period of time. During this time, Annie rediscovers herself and settles down with another man. During this period, she also seems to be over the relationship she had with Laurel. Everything changes two years later when Laurel starts pursuing Annie again. This time what is happening between them is not the kind of love they felt before the accident. Laurel is obsessed with Annie as he feels she owes him for getting crippled. He coerces her to leave her husband to go and be with him. She divorces her husband and moves to continue with her adventure for freedom. Things do not go well for both of them and what started as an exotic adventure almost destroys both of their
lives.
What we learn about love, ourselves and what life has in store for us.
Love is a beautiful thing when experienced with the right person. It can make a person do dangerous thing just for the name of love. What we should understand is that we should not let this feeling be the destruction to us. We should act rational and be able to control ourselves. We should also not look at what is happening today but look to what of tomorrow and plan for it because we don’t know what the future holds for us.
