As a viewer, I laughed historically but, those with Armenian backgrounds would be offended. The character Boris fails to personify anything Russian and the fact that he is a cowardly, philosophy buff, who claims to a pacifist is perfect for the satire. Boris’s actions drive the plot and the story progresses as he grows from wimp, to war hero, to innocent criminal. Woody Allen doesn’t draw out the plot, instead he ends it just as Boris has a chance to achieve the dream of being with his love Sonia. Scenes are based around jokes and, there aren’t any time-killing moments. Woody writes his character Boris tailored to him playing it and, the monologues are hilarious. Both Diane Keaton’s and his performances were excellent and any alterations would take away from the movies brilliance. Woody Allen was a master for his time cinematography. In multiple scenes Allen would use Russian Folk music and he would pair it with comedic stage directions. The lighting didn’t interfere with the plot.
