Changes to schools breakfast and lunch options can give the students an opportunity to improve nutrition and health. Then maybe we can prevent obesity from continuing to be the cause of death for so many American’s. We want to work within changes to the new breakfast and lunch programs to help children fight obesity. Not every food option has to be something sugary or fried. Healthy eating is of great importance as it has a drastic effect on one’s life, and more importantly on the lives of children. Providing appropriate nutrition and educating elementary children of the significance of proper nutrition are essential factors for proper growth and development, chronic disease prevention, and the achievement of academic success (Pittman et al., 2012). Without proper nutritional guidance, children are susceptible towards falling into long lasting poor eating habits that may lead to a number of health risks, including obesity (Steele et al., 2011). Obesity and other health issues are becoming significant problems that keep increasing and have started to become a visible issue in younger children (Steele et al., 2011). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of promoting healthy eating to children in elementary school and the role schools play in the choices children make. This paper also provides solutions to the health issues discussed above by identifying the barriers to healthy eating. More specifically, how these barriers in the education system can prevent elementary school children from learning about healthy eating and how schools can overcome these barriers by adding healthy eating programs to promote optimum health and well being.…

The preventable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and renal failure have become an epidemic in our society. It seems like most of every one we know has either one of above mentioned diseases. Back in the days not everyone was able to afford good quality food, so whatever they ate they ate in moderation, on the other hand now food is more affordable, due to cheap imports from other countries. People have made up a mentality that if less food is good then more should be better, which is not always true. Most of this health care crisis is due to lack of public health education. As health care professionals we know that poor nutrition is responsible for the majority of preventable diseases, while general public has no idea about what goes on in their bodies and what is the importance of proper nutrition. First point which I am going to include in a public nutrition program is Heart disease. Heart disease is responsible for 600,000 deaths in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. Heart disease alone cost the United States $108.9 million each year, total cost includes, cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity. Heart disease is preventable, if the individual just stops smoking, eats low sodium, low cholesterol, and low fat diet and exercises routinely. The second point is going to be Obesity. Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is more than just a cosmetic concern. It increases your risk of diseases and health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases. Lack of education, irresponsible eating habits and poor selections of foods are responsible for this preventable disease. Third point will be to put more emphasis on consuming foods which could contribute to improving the quality of life and the feeling of well being. These foods are green vegetables and fruits. These food items are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Our body needs these substances…

    c. Before discussing facts of the article, I feel that it is important that we become familiar with the platform of the “Let’s Move” campaign. The campaign’s strategies are changing nutritional labeling of products by the United States Department of Agriculture, improving the nutritional standards of school lunches, increasing children’s opportunities for exercise and physical activity, and improving access to better quality foods in the U.S. This campaign is effective at targeting individuals as well as larger communities. However, the authors list some important information that should be considered while trying to prevent childhood obesity.…

The United States is facing a growing epidemic of obesity. Obesity affects individuals of any age, gender, or nationality. Diseases increased by obesity are increasing at alarming rates in children and adults. It is thought that children suffering from obesity will not live as long as their parents. Along with health risks in children they have to endure ridicule and teasing from other children at school resulting in psychological problems that can follow them into adulthood (Neighmond, 2010). Americans have a fascination with fast food and consuming too much food in one meal…

There are legions of problems in the American culture that stem from dietary choices. Many people in Kansas City struggle with obesity and the numerous health issues that come with it, from diabetes, heart complications, and sleep apnea, to sore backs and knees. The childhood obesity rate keeps climbing. The varying factors that lead to the high obesity rate in this community include unhealthy diets, a lack of knowledge about proper nutrition, and economic limitations. By implementing a program that gives kids an in-depth knowledge of nutrition, from an early age, and supplementing that education with a garden…

    Baltimore Childhood Obesity

Since kids spend a lot of their time in school, it is good medium to provide healthy weight education. Children are very impressionable and pick up their life long eating habits at a young age. That is why starting in elementary school positive eating habits and exercise should be encouraged. Ideas such as banning unhealthy foods from schools and increasing mandatory physical education sound good in theory, but are too costly and not feasible solutions for Baltimore. It is much more probable that children will learn to make better choices if good habits are reinforced in schools starting at a young age. The results of study conducted in Canada in 2005, which compared fifth grade students who had attended an elementary school with a nutritional education program to students who attended schools without nutritional programs, showed that students at schools with nutritional education program had significantly lower rates of obesity, higher fruit and vegetable intake, and lower fat consumption ( Veugelers & Fitzgerald, 2005, p. 234). Baltimore school should create healthy weight education programs targeted at elementary school children. Teachers should be required to incorporate basic lessons that teach kids about healthy foods and the importance of exercise. I propose that Baltimore City schools partner with Education in Elementary, a nutritional education program started by Dr.…

Something needs to be done in order to fight this problem and reduce the amount of obesity in our country. What I am proposing is to mandate that all schools be required to teach nutrition education classes to children grades K-12. The University of Crete did a study to discover the benefits of introducing a nutritional educational program in primary schools. This study also assessed whether this education lowered the risk of chronic disease risk factors. After six years they found that risk factors decreased significantly. Introducing children to healthy eating behaviors and the knowledge of how to eat healthy would be beneficial for them and all Americans. This nutrition education would not only focus on healthy eating behaviors but active lifestyles as well. The current health education curriculum is obviously not working. Children are in serious need of an intervention in order to prevent them from being unhealthy at an early age, which would continue throughout the rest of their lives.…

    Obesity And Poverty

Addressing this problem requires more than motivating people to become physically active and increasing nutritional education in the schools. As discussed previously, the cost of non-nutritional foods is a major contributor to the problem as those experiencing poverty are unable to afford to purchase healthier foods consistently. This is something that requires intervention at a much higher level in terms of requiring food companies to provide healthier alternatives to those who are severely economically restricted. The motivation for doing this should come from a desire to decrease healthcare costs incurred by the government as a result of chronic health problems directly related to obesity among the…
