All people ,eventually, will have to stand when others sit and mindlessly toy with the idea of courage, in other words everyone will be or has been courageous at one point in time. In Mildred Taylor’s book, Roll of thunder hear my cry, Stacey is faced with many challenges throughout the book. The book is set during the 1930’s in the south where racism runs rampant, and with all this racism an African American thirteen year old boy is not going to get treated very well. This character has to show courage throughout the book, For example he shows courage when he orchestrates the demolition of the bus who had been tormenting them. Another example being in final few chapters when he stays behind to make sure his friend is ok.…
In the beginning, Melinda didn't care about school. She wasn't paying attention in her classes, she was not doing any of her homework and she even cut class: “The first hour of blowing off school is great. No one to tell me what to do, what to read and what to say” (Anderson 97). This proves that Melinda skipped school and enjoyed the freedom that she had when doing it. However Melinda gets punished for this and after a bad experience in detention, she realizes that she doesn't want to be punished anymore. So Melinda decides to follow the rules and try to do better. She starts going to all her classes and actually takes school more solemnly: “I’ve been going to most of my classes. Good girl Mellie. Roll over, Mellie. Sit, Mellie. No one has patted me on the head, though. I passed an algebra test, I passed an English test and I passed a biology test” (Anderson 143). This quote distinctly shows that she is trying and really wants to improve her grades. Even though Melinda started out bad, she improved her grades and became academically responsible. In addition to growing academically and socially, Melinda has also grown emotionally…

On the first day a girl named Heather attempts to speak to her but she doesn't pay much attention to her. When Melinda went to art class she found that she enjoyed it because of the teacher Mr. Freeman, whom had all the students draw a word out of a broken globe to serve as inspiration over the semester, Melinda picks the word tree. Whether you call it daring, bold, spunky or audacity, Sarah had it. Bravery is a way of fearlessness, which she embodied. Sarah displayed courage by putting her head up from feeling despondent and continued to proceed with her mission. “’Be brave, my sweet love. Be brave, as brave as you can.’ She could not cry” (Rosnay 23). When Sarah had her head shaved she acquired great valor unlike the other children. “When it was her turn, the girl did not struggle. She felt sobs welling up in her throat but forced herself not to cry. Never to cry in front of these men. Never cry. Ever” (Rosnay 81). She didn’t distress who they were, Sarah saw everyone as equals. “She realized she was not afraid of him. She felt a sort of strange pity for him, which puzzled her”(Rosnay 90). Anyone and everyone can be fearless, it just takes an inner ability to show the courage that you contain.…

Mom: "I don't have time for this, Melinda."Her silences about the raping is leading her to have suicidal thoughts and actions. In the end of the book there's a theme called breaking the silence is harder than letting it break you which she does when she wrote on the bathroom stall BOYS TO STAY AWAY FROM which she put Andy Evens name on it and many girls agreed with her then she tells Rachel (her ex best friend and andy's girlfriend) the evidence is a quote “/ didn't call the cops to break up the party, I write. I called—I put the pencil down. I pick it up again—them because some guy raped me. Under the trees. I didn't know what to do. She watches as I carve out the words. She leans closer to me. I write more. / was stupid and drunk and I didn't know what was happening and then he hurt—I scribble that out—raped me. When the police came, everyone was screaming, and I was just too scared, so I cut through some back yards and walked home.” Which at first didn't believe her but then learned the horrifying truth and leaves him which leads to Melindas and his final confrontation which she finally breaks the silence. In the end all conflicts are resolved and she is left a new person one who is stronger than the girl that didn't know what her life was worth in the beginning of the…
Courage was a theme that was shown many times in this story. Cassie once defended Little Man when he found something offensive in a book because she was willing to get punished for equality. “I started slowly toward my desk, but as the hickory stick sliced the tense air, I turned back around. “Miz. Crocker,” I said, “I don’t want my book neither”” Cassie was standing up for something she knew was risky to speak against. When the Logan…
