What Is Miss Brill Epiphany
Miss Brill is an aging, lonely woman who one day decides to unload her outdated fox fur that she kept in a box all these years. Each Sunday, she wears her fox fur and sits on her original bench at the Public Garden to view the passerby’s and listen intently to the music the band plays. She even sneakily drops in on some of the public conversations without them knowing. When the conversations aren’t interesting enough for her she moves on to the next couple and listens to their conversation. She does this for everyone and begins to think that everyone is an actor and actress, including Miss Brill, and is putting on a performance for the whole world to see. While still in her fantasy, a young boy and girl sit on the side of Miss Brill and are …show more content…
The distinguished meaning of epiphany is that is an enlightening breakthrough within someone’s life. An epiphany allows a person to develop a deeper understanding or insight of their situation and, a new perspective on their life. Furthermore, epiphanies create illuminating discoveries that enable someone, in this case, Miss Brill, to visualize their true role in the world and overcome what has been holding them back. Miss Brill has to overcome her solitude and the strong belief of her delusions. An epiphany can arise from anything, whether it be simple or extremely complex as to where you had to fight for this information. For Miss Brill, her epiphany emerged from a simple, yet harsh, confrontation which did not have a happy ending. Instead, Miss Brill was heartbroken, but she still has discovered the truth and most times, the truth can be …show more content…
This signifies the beginning of Miss Brill's distorted reality. She admires and caresses the object as if it is a live animal, as shown when she “rubbed the life back into the dim little eyes” (82). This quotation is significant because it displays that Miss Brill prepares to put on her mask and vivify the fox fur so that she can view her fantasy world through its eyes. When Miss Brill puts on her “mask”, it is the key that allows her to unlock her fantasy world and her inner mindset to form an influence on her perspective of reality. Furthermore, the fox fur is known as “little rogue” or an adventurer. Because of this, Miss Brills’ fur leads her through her delusional experience and administers a designated role to herself and everyone she sees in the Public

In Katherine Mansfield’s “Miss Brill”, the story takes place in a town in France, where the protagonist – an older woman by the name of Miss Brill, lives near the “Jardins Publiques”; which means “Public Gardens.” Miss Brill is an English teacher that listens in on conversations to fill the emptiness and loneliness that she experiences in her own life. She especially enjoys going to the gardens on Sundays because there is a live band that plays and there are typically many more people present. This particular Sunday she was greatly enjoying herself because it was busier than usual. “There were a number of people out this afternoon, far more than last Sunday. And the band sounded louder and gayer. That was because the Season had begun. For although the band played all year round on Sundays, out of season it was never the same” (135).…

Because Miss Brill struggles to admit the reality of getting old, her vanity makes her thinks she’s a special person and an actress in the play. Miss Brill believes she has a “special seat” (65) in Jardin’s Publiques the park where she sits every time. This particular Sunday afternoon is quite special for Miss Brill, because she has taken out her favourite fur from the box. Her “little rogue” (65) is like a pet “biting its tail just by her left ear” (65), and she imagines it as her companion. As Miss Brill goes through her day on watching and listening other people in the park she thought, “She had become really quite expert . . . at listening though she didn’t listen, at sitting in other people’s lives just for a minute while they talked round her” (65). She fantasizes about reading a newspaper to an invalid gentleman snoring besides her, pretending to be on stage and believing she was a good actress. “An actress ---are ye?” (67) thought Miss Brill, which again shows her vanity.…

Although Miss Brill is a fully developed character, she remains static even when faced with her reality. When the young couple ridiculed, Miss Brill by referring to her as “that stupid, old, thing,” and making fun of her fur by calling it a “Fu-fur” it crushed her. Passing the bakery, she went straight into her dark little room, and quickly put the fur back into its box. Miss Brill thought she heard something cry, but it was really herself that she heard crying, because she was finally about to see that she was living in a fantasy , and the truth is her life is lonely and meaningless.…

She visits the park every Sunday to “play her part” in the performance of life, when in reality she is an observer of other people’s lives. She feels a part of the environment, but really she is alienated from it. Miss Brill has an illusion that she is part of the community “no doubt somebody would have noticed if she hadn’t been there”, but really she is invisible to the people around her. The cruel comments by the young couple demonstrate a lack of empathy towards older people and the words shatter her fantasy of being involved in society. The text opened my eyes on how older people can be treated, and I will definitely be more considerate and…
