There are many different definitions of what is “family”. According to Friedman, Bowden, and Jones (2003) family refers to “ two or more persons who are joined together by bonds of sharing and emotional closeness and who identify themselves as being part of the family” (Friedman, Bowden, & Jones, 2003, p. 10). Family can be almost anything one may want it to be, and no one is able to say if it is wrong or right. The only way to determine a person’s family is to ask the individual (Friedman et al., 2003).

Miranda Hillard is an interior designer who is not happy in her marriage with her husband Daniel and wants a divorce. Both parents were able to set aside their differences and put their children first.
Autonomy was seen in the family because each member was able to express their thoughts and feelings. Especially when the children stuck up for their dad when they wanted more time with him. Daniel was also able to take personal responsibility for his actions by proving to Miranda, the judge, and his children that he was a loving, hardworking, and caring father.
In the beginning of the movie the family unit was severely dysfunctional, there was chaos, no set boundaries or rules between the parents, no negotiating between each member, and no willingness to adapt (Friedman et al., 2003). As the movie progressed Mrs. Doubtfire was able to show each member of the family what family really is and help them become a more adequate to optimal family unit. The family effect had changed dramatically, Miranda and Daniel were much more affectionate towards each other.
