Muscle cells react in response to messages from the central nervous system. Cells include small myofilaments named myosin and actin. When an athlete puts stress on their muscles through training, the weaker myofilaments are damaged, the body reacts to this by replacing the damaged myofilaments with stronger ones that better cope with the stress of training. As an athlete progressively overloads their training, the number of myofilaments increasing, causing the muscle fibers to grow and get stronger. If an athlete does not overload their training, myofilaments will not be recruited and they will not improve their movement efficiency and performance. For example, a sprinter using progressive overload will continue to recruit muscular fibres, thus being stronger and faster than their opponent. Therefore, when larger and stronger fibres are combined , it allows the muscles to produce more force whilst also increasing their resistance to fatigue and damage. They are relatively inelastic and they tighten when the joint is under pressure, and so prevent excess movement, when an excessive force is applied however, the ligament can tear. Strengthening your ligaments will give your muscles a strong base to work from, so will prevent injury and improve overall muscular strength. Ligaments will strengthen when they are targeted specifically. Doing exercises such as wobble board exercises which strengthen the ligaments in the ankles. Doing these exercises regularly will increase the strength of the ligaments and prevent injury. For example, an athlete suffering from ankle ligament issues will benefit from practicing exercises on the wobble board everyday to increase the strength of ligaments.
