Since I am the goddess of the ocean, I represent the sea. My siblings and I protect anglers and sailors as they travel. When sailors or anglers are in distress, my siblings and I will save the misfortunate humans. To ensure a safe passage, sailors will pray to me, so that I ensure their ships a safe journey ("NEREIDES"). My role is to bear a son who will be greater than his father. Zeus and Poseidon wished to marry me until they discovered I was prophesied to give birth to a son who would be greater than his father; therefore, Zeus …show more content…
forces me to marry to a mortal man named Peleus ("Pitlane Magazine").
In many myths, I am only known in the Trojan War because I am the mother of the great Greek warrior Achilles. I am a loving and caring mother to Achilles. In order to help my son, I ask many favors from the immortals. Even though I am a minor goddess, I play a major role in the Trojan War.
I have many symbols to represent myself as a sea goddess. Such symbols include seashells, sea horses, seaweed, and anything associated with the ocean. My two most common symbols are seashells and seaweed because both items are most commonly associated with the ocean (“The Role of Women in the Art of Ancient Greece”). Since I am a minor sea goddess, the symbols to represent myself are any items related to the sea. There is not an existing story to why my symbols represent me other than the fact that I am a sea goddess.
There are several interesting myths that exist concerning myself. One myth is about my marriage. Zeus and Poseidon both pursued me, for the gods wished marry me. One day Themis prophesied that I would bear a son who will be
greater than his father. Upon learning of the prophecy, Zeus and Poseidon knew they could not marry me. Zeus knew he could not have a son who could overthrow him in power, for the child would bring great destruction and chaos. Since Poseidon fears the prophecy, he marries my sister Amphitrite. In order for me not have a son greater than one of the gods, Zeus forces me to marry a mortal man named Peleus. I did not wish to marry the mortal. In order to escape Peleus, I transformed myself into various shapes such as fire, water, wind, a tree, a bird, a tiger, a lioness, and a serpent. Despite my attempts to deny Peleus, he held onto me until I transformed myself back into my human form. I knew I was defeated; therefore, I agreed to marry the brave mortal man. Our wedding took place on Mount Pelion. All of the immortals came to our wedding except for the goddess of discord, for Zeus wanted to the wedding to be perfect. Eris decides to start a fight among the goddesses, for she was not welcomed at the wedding. Eris throws an apple stating it was a gift for the most beautiful goddess. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite fights for the apple. To decide the winner, Zeus asks the mortal Paris chose the winner. Each goddess offers Paris a prize to persuade his answer. Paris chooses Aphrodite, for she offers Paris the lovely woman Helen. Helen is married to the Greek king Menelaus. Her father forced all her suitors to take an oath to protect Helen and her husband; therefore, when Aphrodite gives Helen to Paris, the Greek kings travel to Troy to retrieve Helen and return her home. Paris refuses to return Helen to the Greeks; therefore, the Trojan War begins. The war exists because the goddess of discord throws a golden apple to the goddesses during my wedding ("Thetis and Peleus").
