It has been called a lifelong battle. But why is the battle easier for some rather than others? Some people’s brains are genetically mapped so that they are less likely to become addicted to things like drugs and alcohol. In a scientific article titled Addiction Is Caused by Genetic and Environmental Factors that was written by Claudia Wallis helps explain the effects that one’s genes and genetic make up can affected their chances of becoming a drug addict or alcoholic. Claudia Wallis reports Dr. David Goldman, head of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, stating that “addiction ranks among the most heritable of mental illnesses.”( Wallis). Addiction is scientifically classified as a mental illness and not a habit. There is a strong possibility that one’s addiction can be passed along to their offspring. So there is a higher chance that one becomes an alcoholic if a parent or grandparent was. ”Addiction researchers like Goldman have begun to pinpoint how specific genetic factors slick the road to addiction. Numerous genes have been linked to addiction, though fewer than a dozen have been strongly implicated.”(wallis). Wallis explains that even though its early in the research process researchers are beginning to see the connection of genetics to the illness of addiction. “Even the tendency to try a dangerous, illegal drug like crack or heroin is partially under genetic …show more content…
In order to understand this debate, one must look at its background and examine both sides of the argument. The argument of nature vs nurture was developed over time and was created in 1869 by Francis Galton. Francis Galton is the father of the concept of Nature vs Nurture. Galton was born on February 12, 1822 in Warwickshire England. Galton started his research into the field of heredity because of his cousin Charles Darwin. Darwin is an English scientist from the 19th century. He is called the father of Darwinism because he founded the theory. Darwinism is also called Natural selection, and that is where Galton branched off on his own studies. From the theory of Natural selection Galton created his own eventually calling it Nature vs Nurture. When one things of nurture one thinks of mothers taking care of their child but that’s not what it really means. Nurture can be good or it can be bad. Nurture is defined as the environmental factors that influence an organism’s
