In the story The Girl From Beyond, this little girl, Nhinhinha, never caught anyone’s attention until her parents notice her mystical power. Nhinhinha always says things that nobody understands, but one day she starts to make her wishes come true just by mentioning it. After Nhihinha cured her mother’s illness and made it rain, her parents begin to think about the advantages she could bring to the family in the future. Unfortunately, Nhinhinha died because she mentioned she wants a coffin. I do not feel sad about the death of this little girl, instead, I think it is a release for her. She did bring fortune to the family, but her parents will force her to make wishes of bigger subjects in the future because the greed of humanity. The story of
Nhinhinha is a tragedy ever since she started to use her power, also it reveals that the human’s greed is unlimited. This story reminds me of the child goddess in Nepal, her childhood is actually full of emptiness. People says she has abnormal power, and she just sits there, receiving worships from people, and does nothing. In some way, her story is tragic as well. The story Tangerine Girl describes a story between the South American girl and her dream lover- a soldier of U.S. Navy. She received gifts from the plane which fly across her house every day, but later realized her “lover” is the group of soldiers and ran away. From the soldiers’ perspective, the girl is what their dream lover should look like. In other words, although the girl mistakenly takes the soldiers as an individual, this individual is her lover type. I do feel sorry for the girl, because every young girl always has an illustration about their dreamy love, but at the same time, this case teaches the girl that she need to face the reality in the future. This story exaggerates the differences between reality and dream, tells the reader that fairy tales never exist in our life.
