What Is Okonkwo's Portrayal Of Women Today
How are women portrayed in the society today? What are the roles of women in Things Fall Apart and today's world.
Living in the society today there are 100 women for every 105 men. From back in the days, it is wise to say that men are actually dominating over the country. Out of 195 countries in the world, according to the internet, there are currently 16 women who are the president and prime ministers of their countries. That is only 8% of women controlling over the countries. From this result, we are able to tell that women just generally have less power than men. However, oppositely, Okonkwo's (third?) wife Ekwefi is rather portrayed and treated as an object then actual humans. Some examples of her portrayal are “Okonkwo is bashing her”. From this scene, I believe that not only the wife was bad, but also Okonkwo was generally just abusive as well. Even though she may have done something wrong, there is no need to abuse anyone because they did the wrong thing. In this case if it happened in the real world, the punishment will be heavy as staying in jail for 10, 20 years or just staying there for the rest of your life. And then some of them have their love life for long and eventually marry each other. But then after marrying, only one of them tend to go back to work and that is the men. Since after the male and female marry, the male would like their wife to stay back at home and take care of the household. From back in the days to even now, this kind of tradition is followed. The women stay at home taking care of the kids, cooking, cleaning while the men go outside and work. Even though this is how the world works today, I believe that there should be gender equality around the world. Both men and women should be able to do the same and equal things such as women going to work, being the President, or having a title.
