What Is Professionalism?
Professionalism refers to exhibiting the greatest and most principled methods of fulfilling an individual’s responsibilities in any professional occupation. Regarding professionalism in teaching, the definition of professionalism, refers to exhibiting an open-minded, thoughtful, and principled method of performing the responsibilities of a teaching position. A teacher must always conduct themselves in an ethical manner, and treat students, parents/guardians, as well as coworkers, and administrators justly, fairly, friendly, and compassionately (Charles, 2014). It is a teacher’s obligation to be professional with their students by being truthful with them, and behaving toward them in a civil manner that is extremely responsible (Charles, 2014). Professionalism displayed by a teacher, is recognizing that a quality education is the mutual goal they share with the parents/guardians. A teacher should also make a rigorous effort to communicate with parents, comprehend and respect the morals and backgrounds of their diverse cultures, and exhibit a constructive and vigorous role in relationships between the home and school communities (Association of American Educators, n. d.). An additional facet of professionalism, is the professionalism teachers display toward their coworkers and administrators. A vital display of professionalism should be the respect they have for one another. In addition, teachers dedicated to professionalism, must collaborate with administrators and coworkers to establish an environment that enhances learning and nurtures success. Furthermore, professional educators should not gossip or inappropriately share confidential information (Zeiger, 2018), and teachers should never hinder their coworker's freedom of expression (Association of American Educators, n.
