Quality improvement is …show more content…
It is based on a systematic approach to solving nursing practice issues. The purpose of quality improvement is to use a systematic and data guided approach to improve patient outcomes (Hewner, 2013). Once a problem is identified, it becomes a quality improvement issue. Nurses in the organization may conduct a literature research using evidence based practice to find solution to the issue. Therefore, quality improvement deals with identifying the problem and implementing the solution while evidence based practice is the victor that is used to determine a proven intervention to solve the problem (Fitzpatrick, 2016). When evidence based practice is used for quality improvement, the results and findings are applied within the area where the problem was identified. Therefore, the findings may not be generalized or copied broadly. They are problem specific. While evidence based practice is used for collecting information and determining proper interventions, quality improvement is used to identify issues that need improvement, define how the outcomes will be measured, and develop a plan to collect data and evaluate implemented interventions (Fitzpatrick, …show more content…
In my workplace, management strives to implement interventions based on evidence based practice. Evidence based practice is used in every aspect of nursing care delivery in my immediate work area. I currently work in a medical center in a correctional facility. In my immediate work area, many patients/inmates are elderly. Therefore, falls are a concern within this segment of the inmate population. Therefore, management has implemented a fall assessment and prevention protocol that is used to minimize the number of falls in each month. Evidence based practice suggests the implementation of a fall protocol. Thus, management has established a fall prevention committee that is in charge of fall statistics, implementation of preventive measures, and evaluation of patient outcomes. After we determine that a certain inmate is at a higher risk for falls, we implement measures like keeping the room free of clutter, keeping the room well lit, offering food or drinks frequently, assessing the pain level frequently, setting up a bowel regimen, keeping the bed at the lowest position when a staff member is not present, placing a sign stating that the patients is at risk of falls, and conducting hourly rounds. Management has determined that these measures are evidence based and proven through peer reviewed research. These measures have proven effective as we have seen a significant decline in the number and intensity of
