What Is Relationship Abuse?
First off, what is relationship abuse? According to stoprelationshipabuse.org (2015), “Relationship abuse is a pattern of abusive and coercive behaviors used to maintain power and control over a former or current intimate partner.”(pg.1) Taking this in context of online relationships, one can see how easily abuse can form. “1 in 3 (36%) dating college students has given a dating partner their computer, email, or social network passwords and these students are more likely to experience digital dating abuse.” (Peugh & Glauber, 2011, pg.12) When a partner is in control of the other’s online life they can, view messages, change passwords, delete friends, and alter profiles.
