However, technology columnist Alexis Madrigal was able to ascertain the basics of the system. According to him, Netflix’s adjectival genres are created based on this formula: Region + Adjectives + Noun Genre + Based On... + Set In... + From the... + About... + For Age X to Y.13 However, there is a hierarchy to these descriptors with most adjectival genres only employing three, such as “Irreverent TV Dramas Featuring a Strong Female Lead” or “Binge-Worthy Conspiracy TV Shows”. The genres that are employed for each text are determined by the aforementioned metadata tagging of each text, but according to Yellin, they are limited by three factors: 1) Netflix only wants to display 50 characters which eliminates long genre 2) there had to be enough content that fit the description of the genre and 3) they only wanted genres that made grammatical sense.14 In addition to the implementation of genres that are algorithmically determined to be enjoyed by each individual user, Netflix personalizes the texts under each genre according to the other tags the texts have that each user highly rates. For example, if Netflix is recommending TV comedies to a
