What derives a society from being a utopia or dystopia? For a society to function as a utopia it must be ideal with perfect qualities. There would no longer be people struggling, or battling the everyday needs of life. It would be a society where everyone’s needs are satisfied, and the society runs smoothly and effectively. Contrary to the imagined utopia, a dystopia serves as a society that is completely oppressed. A dystopia gives no value to life, limits an individual’s freedom, and is simply unpleasant to live in. The main character Memo want’s to pursue his passion and hobby while working on electronics and hacking. However, during Memo’s flashback (which is how the movie is told), his dad wants him to grow crops on the families’ land. Unfortunately, the homestead dried up and Memo and his father have to walk by foot to buy expensive water. They are constantly monitored by security through armed cameras. Memo works on an electronic device that can hack into any range of communication. He creates these receivers to hear voices from miles away. The realities seen in Sleep Dealer are similar to the Southwest’s in a way that the advancement of technology is slowly devaluing the world. The Southwest faces many troubles with being monitored by the government in relation to its surrounding countries, which can eventually evolve into what was noted in Sleep Dealer. The Southwest’s resources are consistently changing, with some becoming more scare. The movie makes it evident that with the removal of certain resources, the Southwest loses its integrity through its environment and natural resources. Luz makes a living by uploading memories to an online company. Viewers pay to see the memories, in which she eventually starts uploading memories of Memo and gets more offers involving memories with him. After Memo discovers Luz has been getting paid for uploading memories of him, he feels betrayed. Ramirez, the man who was requesting for memories of Memo to be uploaded, crosses the US-Mexican border, and eventually catches up to Memo. Ramirez was the very person who blew Memo’s father into pieces. Being reluctant to accepting his help, Memo eventually gives in. Ramirez’s drone that was sent to Santa Ana, was defeated, but so was the dam. The city once again is able to nourish all the water. Memo receives news from his home that they are celebrating that the water is now flowing
